Dedicated to the work of form er Gov. Barbara Rob erts. the house will hold 10 w om en and men who are stepping out of the confines o f a mental health facility and into a more com fortable, safe living environment. More than 50 people, in cluding state, federal and lo cal officials, attended a July 28 dedication cerem ony with Roberts, held at the new fa cility at N ortheast 50lh and K illingsw orth streets. With two cousins in state psychiatric hospitals and a son with autism, Roberts holds is sues of mental illness close to her heart. She said she realizes how difficult it is to transition from a state hospital back into a home, and feels proud to be connected to services that help smooth out the process. “This is an amazing pro gram and a distinct honor,” Roberts said. C ascadia develops and op erates a variety of innovative and stable housing options for people with low income and sp e c ia l n eed s th ro u g h o u t M ultnom ah County. P re s id e n t and C E O o f Cascadia Leslie Ford said that independent contractors, and state and county officials did an am azingjob developing the site with a turnaround of only 90 days. I think that it’s important the world is full of a variety of ethnicity; our workplaces should represent that, our society. It’s especially important in the social work field. We come in contact with people of different cultures; we need to be sensitive to other’s customs. 1 don’t think it’s important 1 think it’s essential.
