T he police bureau is a com m unity fixture to let resi dents know that help is always near. T hat’s why the five area Portland Precincts are hosting open houses to let the com m unity com e in and take a peek. M em bers o f the com m unity are encouraged to drop in and meet officers w ho w ork in their neigh borhood. O n Saturday, Aug. 13 the N ortheast Precinct, 449 N.E. Em erson St., will have their open house from noon to 4 p.m. “ It gives people a chance to come see what we do. how w e operate and to meet som e of the officers. A lot of tim e people don’t get further than the holding cell if they are under arrest. This is a chance to get your questions answered on the spot and to see the rhyme and reason for why we are here,” said precinct officer Lt. Harry Jackson. Jackson, along with the other officers, will be on hand to answ er questions, give tours, and spend tim e getting to know com m unity members in an informal setting. Chil dren are espec ial 1 y w elcom e to come sit in a police car, look through the m obile com m and center, and possi bly see a police dog or horse. Snacks will be provided. Portland Police C hief D errick Foxw orth sees the open houses as mini public safety fairs, where police can provide im portant inform ation, w hile also discussing crim e and neighborhood livability concerns w ith people w ho live in that precinct. " I ’m hopeful that Portlanders will take som e tim e out on a sunny sum m er day to com e by and say hello,” Foxw orth said. The chief hopes open houses will becom e an annual tradition. O ver the last year, Portland Po lice Precincts have implemented out reach efforts aim ed at crim e preven tion and building relationships with the com m unity. T hrough special missions targeting crim e by neigh borhood, to providing information via mail, to knocking on doors to talk with people about w hat is happen ing on their street, the Police Bureau and the com m unity have noted the reduction o f reported crim e in some cases. Even though the open houses for the Southeast and East Precincts have passed, there is still a chance to visit other precincts as well. The North Precinct open house is set for Saturday, Aug. 6 and is located at 7214 N. Philadelphia. The Central Precinct is the last o f the open houses on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 1111 S -W ^ 1*1 Ave. in downtown Portland. All open houses start at noon and end at 4 Congratulations on your union o f marriage Love your Family and Friends F re d M eyer Inclusion Value S ta te m e n t Inclusion is the process o f leveraging diversity to add m easurable value to organizational perform ance and outcom es.
