Panthers Launch ‘Burn Baby Burn’ Hot Sauce
(AP) — F orm er Black Panthers
in O akland, C alif, are hoping the
phrase "B um Baby B um " will help
their nonprofit organization market
a new product — hot sauce.
The Huey P. N ew ton F ounda
tion, nam ed for the co-founder o f
the 1960s m ilitant group, is seeking
to tradem ark the phrase that for
many brings to m ind the racially
charged 1965 W atts Riots in Los
Angeles that left more than 30 people
dead, at least 1,000 w ounded and
hundreds o f buildings in ashes.
The new line of hot sauce, called
“Bum Baby Bum: A Taste o f the
Sixties Revolutionary Hot Sauce," is
aimed at “anyone who wants to have
an extra savory boost to their food,"
said David Hilliard, executive direc
tor and original Black Panther.
The foundation also plans to
produce its ow n salsa, as w ell as a
clothing line called “Spirit o f the
Sixties.”
H illiard said the group hopes to
start selling the spicy condim ent
later this year to com m em orate the
4(Xh anniversary o f the 1966 found
ing o f the Black Panther Party.
