w ho becam e a legal superstar after
helping clear O .J. Sim pson during a
sensational m urder trial in which he
u ttered the fam ous quote “If it
d o esn ’t fit, you m ust acquit,” died
T uesday. He w as 67.
C ochran died o f a brain tum or at
his hom e in Los A ngeles, his family
said.
“C ertainly, Jo h n n ie’s career will
be noted as one m arked by ‘celeb­
rity ’ cases and clientele,” his family
said in a statem ent. “But he and his
fam ily w ere m ost proud o f the work
he did on b eh alf o f those in the
com m unity.”
W ith his colorful suits and ties,
his gift for courtroom oratory and a
k n ac k fo r c o in in g m e m o ra b le
phrases, C ochran w as a vivid addi­
tion to the pantheon o f best-know n
A m erican barristers.
T he “ if it d o esn ’t fit” phrase
w ould be quoted and parodied for
years afterw ard. It derived from a
dram atic m om ent during w hich
S im pson tried on a pair o f blood­
stained “ m urder g loves” to show
ju ro rs they did not fit. Som e legal
experts called it the turning point in
the trial.
Soon after, ju ro rs found the Hall
o f Fam e football star not guilty o f
the 1994 slayings o f his ex-w ife
N icole Brow n Sim pson and her
friend R onald G oldm an.
F o rC o ch ran , S im p so n ’s acquit­
tal w as the crow ning achievem ent
in a career notable for victories,
often in cases with racial them es.

He was a black man known for cham ­
pioning the causes o f black defen ­
dants. Som e o f them , like Sim pson,
w ere fam ous, but m ore often than
not they w ere unknow ns.
“T he clients I ’ ve cared about the
m ost are the N o Js, the ones w ho
nobody know s,” said C ochran, who
proudly displayed copies in his o f­
fice o f the multimillion-dollar checks
he won for ordinary citizens w ho
said they w ere abused by police.

Man Shot in Face After Attempted Robbery
Parry Low , 47, told police that
three m en shot him in th e face ju st
after 5 a.m . on M arch 30 as the
victim w as w alking over an Inter­
state 5 bridge. He stated he w as
leaving a 7-11 store to pick up a jo b
application.

money. T he victim then turned and
attem pted to run off, but one o f the
suspects allegedly shot him in the
face.

house and called 911.
A K-9 unit w as unable to pick up
a scent, but bullet casings were
found. T here is som e speculation
that the three men left North P ort­
land on M AX in order to flee the
crim e scene and they are still on the
loose.

Panther E lm er “G eronim o” Pratt,
w ho spent 27 years in prison for a
m urder he d id n 't com m it. W hen
C ochran helped Pratt w in his free­
d om in 1997 he called the m om ent
“the happiest day o f my life practic­
ing law .”
He w on a $760,000 aw ard in a
w rongful death law suit filed by the
fam ily o f R on Settles, a black co l­
lege football star w ho died in police
custody in 1981. C ochran ch a l­
lenged police claim s that Settles
hanged h im self in jail after a sp eed ­
ing arrest. T he play er’s body was
exhum ed, an autopsy perform ed
and it revealed Settles had been
choked.
His clients also included Haitian
im m igrant A bner Louim a, w ho was
tortured by N ew York police, and
T yisha M iller, a 19-year-old black
w om an shot to death by Riverside
police w ho said she reached for a
gun on her lap when they broke her
car window in an effort to disarm her.
But the attention he received from
all o f those cases d id n ’t com e re­
motely close to the fame the Simpson
case brought him.

talk show s, was aw arded his ow n
C ourt TV show , and traveled the
w orld o ver giving speeches.
He rem ained a beloved figure in
the black com m unity, adm ired as a
law yer w ho was relentless in his
pursuit o f justice and as a philan­
thropist w ho helped fund a U CLA
scholarship, a low -incom e housing
complex and a New Jersey legal acad­
em y, am ong other chari tableendeav-
ors.

Shooting Suspect Arrested
A year-old m urder case cam e closer to
being solved last T hursday w hen Portland
Police arrested 17-year-old B irgilio M arin
Arellano.
A rellano w as w anted for shooting and
killing 16-year-old Alexx A lexander on June
6. 2004 in w hat has been described as a
gang-related attack.
A lexander was shot inside a car he was
riding in after a low -rider show at E xpo
C enter in north Portland. E vidence from tw o
Portland hom es and one M ilw aukie hom e
w as collected on T hursday but it w as not
said w hat clues led them to A rellano. They
found the suspect at the intersection o f SE
162nd A venue and S E F oster Road.
