C ochran died o f a brain tum or at his hom e in Los A ngeles, his family said. “C ertainly, Jo h n n ie’s career will be noted as one m arked by ‘celeb­ rity ’ cases and clientele,” his family said in a statem ent. “But he and his fam ily w ere m ost proud o f the work he did on b eh alf o f those in the com m unity.” W ith his colorful suits and ties, his gift for courtroom oratory and a k n ac k fo r c o in in g m e m o ra b le phrases, C ochran w as a vivid addi­ tion to the pantheon o f best-know n A m erican barristers. T he “ if it d o esn ’t fit” phrase w ould be quoted and parodied for years afterw ard. It derived from a dram atic m om ent during w hich S im pson tried on a pair o f blood­ stained “ m urder g loves” to show ju ro rs they did not fit. Shooting Suspect Arrested A year-old m urder case cam e closer to being solved last T hursday w hen Portland Police arrested 17-year-old B irgilio M arin Arellano. A rellano w as w anted for shooting and killing 16-year-old Alexx A lexander on June 6. 2004 in w hat has been described as a gang-related attack. A lexander was shot inside a car he was riding in after a low -rider show at E xpo C enter in north Portland. E vidence from tw o Portland hom es and one M ilw aukie hom e w as collected on T hursday but it w as not said w hat clues led them to A rellano.
