OCOIIRAGEOUS
African-American history by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Many years after his professional
basketball career ended, Kareem
A b d u l-Ja b b a r, fo rm e rly Lew
Alcindor Jr. is solidly rooted in other
careers. As a motivational speaker,
youth m entor and coach, and
widely published author. Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar has accom plished
much more in recent years than he
ever did on the basketball court.
While he was one of the most fa
mous players of all times, w ith his
signature “Sky-Hook” shot, Abdul-
Jabbar knew he could not play ball
all his life. Abdul-Jabbar has writ
ten about young men who think
they don’t have to finish school
because they can become rich as a
sports hero. He is the first to point
out that after the game it is easy to
fade into poverty and obscurity.
Abdul-Jabbar speaks of his own
fears of leaving the game, in the
following excerpt from "Black Pro
files in C o u rag e: A Legacy of Afri
can-American Achievement."
When I played my last profes
sional basketball game on June
12, 1989,1 began m y passage fro m
one kind o f life to another. A t forty-
two, it was a scary transport. Even
though / had a farew ell year to
prepare m yself emotionally, I still
fe lt strange when it ended. It was
like saying good-bye to someone
days kept black players from get
ting to far ahead on the jo b and in
the sports arena as well. In his book,
which has a forw ard by Henry' Louis
Gates Jr., and is co-authored by
Alan Steinberg, Abdul-Jabbar ex
plores the lives of several fa
mous African Americans in

history. Profiling an explorer,
(Estevan), a writer and speaker
(F re d e ric k D o u g la s s), a
woman spy, nurse, and leader.
/a n d Alan Steinberg
(Harriet Tubman), and sev
eral other early black Am eri
can heroes gives the reader a
broad base o f famous African
A m ericans to enjoy. The
book em phasizes the fact that
"freedom fighting,” is not just
physical fighting, as with
Crispus Attucks in the Civil
War. It is much more. As a
black woman “conductor" on
the U nderground Railroad
with a forty thousand dollar
price on her head. Harriet
Tubman also did her share of
mind would become his primary fighting at the pulpit. A bdul-
talent later in life. His first big works Jabbar’s writing on inventor Lewis
as an author, “ Black Profiles in Latimer show how an obscure quiet
Courage,” was a natural for Abdul- man can fight wars with his brain, a
Jabbar. He used his own courage to pencil, and a piece of chalk.
Fittingly, the book ends with
face the court when big white ball
players like Larry Bird dominated Rosa Parks, a small timid black
the sport. Discrimination in those woman on a bus who refuses to
you loved; it fe lt like a death. Hut
it was also a rebirth. Because fo r
the first time since / hyj . v eight. I was
fre e to explore m y other interests.
Abdul-Jabbar had a plan. As a
graduate of UCLA, he knew his

give up her seat to a white person.
A b d u l-Jab b ar show s how this
woman used a small non-violent
act to bring the entirety of the most
powerful nation in the world to its
knees. He powerfully demonstrates
how this tiny mustard seed brought
on a legal battle w hich forced
America to look equality in the face.
A bdul-Jabbar dem onstrates how
Rosa Parks took on a global power,
shamed it in front o f the whole
world, and won the right for all
African Americans to equal space
on public transportation. The Land
of the Free and the Home o f the
Brave had to stand up (while she
sat d ow n) and examine the roots of
discrimination in the hearts o f ev
ery living individual across this vast
nation.
While he did later become a
coach, Abdul-Jabbar had som e
thing much different smoldering
deep in his heart. He wanted to
w rite. After being awarded a spot
in the Basketball Hall of Fame in
1995, this tall black giant with an
infectious smile would go on to
publish several books, a direction
that surprised many of his follow
ers. After coaching an American
Indian basketball team, he wrote,
"A Season on the Reservation: My
Sojourn With the White Mountain
A paches.”
Today this well polished intel
lectual and writer in expensive suits
is a long way from the sweaty locker
room. While he may not hear the
cheers of thousands in huge are
nas around the country, he silently
feels the joy of knowing that mil
lions o f people around the world
might be reading any one of his
several books at this very moment.
