(A P )— A national religious group rep
resenting 36 Protestant and Orthodox de
nominations said Tuesday that U.S. for
eign policy is “dangerous" and urged Presi
dent Bush to turn over authority in Iraq to
the United Nations.
The National Council of Churches,
which has been highly critical o f the war.
acknowledged that Christians disagree on
the issue, but said that giving control to
the U.N. was the only way to create “ last
ing peace.”
“ M any people see our policy as one
based on protection o f our co u n try ’s
econom ic interests narrow ly defined,
rather than on principles o f human rights
and ju stice that w ould serve our n atio n 's
in terests,” read the letter, w hich the
council hopes will be read in churches
nationw ide. “W e are convinced that
current policy is dangerous for A m erica
and the w orld and will only lead to fur
ther violence.”
