at Oregon Zoo
A red-flanked duiker, born Jan.
30, is on exhibit with its m other at
the Oregon Zoo. D uikers are one o f
the sm allest m em bers o f the ante­
lope family.
A ccording to zookeepers, the
fem ale calf is healthy and w eighs
about three pounds
D uikers are not endangered, but
is threatened by decreasing num ­
bers due to the bush m eat trade
crisis in Africa.
D uikers are found throughout
sub-Saharan A frica, in wetlands,
rainforests and heavy tim ber for­
est. D u ik ers are c la s s ifie d as
frugivores. In the wild they brow se
or graze on grass, leaves, shrubs
and trees, but the main com ponent
o f their diet consists o f wild fruits
and v eg etab les, such as yam s,
s w e e t p o ta to e s an d c a r ro ts .
T h ey ’ve also have been observed
eating carrion and insects, so they
have a protein need in their diet,
w hich is different from most ante­
lope.
The zoo is located five m inutes
from dow ntow n Portland, just o ff
H ighway 26. T he zoo is also acces­
sible by M AX 1 ight rai 11 i n e. The zoo
opens at 9 a.m. daily.
