She was born in M ississippi and moved to Oregon where she lived in Vanport to work in the Kaiser Shipyard in the early 1940s. She was once displaced by the Emanuel Hospital expansion. She attended John A dam s High School, Portland C om m unity C ollege and Portland C ollege o f Business. She was em ployed at the Q uim by C orporation. S urvivors include a daughter, L aW anda R. O llison Y Beloved Community Member Remembered E sther E. Hardy Funeral services w ere held Saturday, O ct. 18 for Esther E. Hardy at the Freedom A ssem bly C hurch o f G od in Christ. She w as 91 years old. Esther Hardy was born in Aug. 18 , 19 12, in Hennessey, Okla. and lived in San B ernadino, Cali I. until 2001. She worked as a preschool and music teacher in the San Bem adino School District. She married Pastor D empsey Hardy in 1935 and received herevangelist missionary license in 1945.She was involved in several churches as a financial secretary, an executive board m em ber and a regional and district m issionary. S urvivors include her sons. Rev. W .G. Hardy Sr.. Rupert H ardy and Carl W ashington; and daughters Sylvia A nderson. Mary Lou Jackson and Pearlene W ashington. Army Veteran Dies at 57 Stanley Givens Funeral services w ere held Saturday, Oct. 11 at New Hope Baptist C hurch tor Robert Stanley G iv ens. He w as 57. He was born on M arch 1 7 .1946 in Tucson. Ariz.., the I7'ho f IS children. He w ascalled Stun o r Stanley by friends. He m oved to Portland at the age o f 18 and attended M ultnom ah C ollege. He was drafted into the U.S. A rm y in 1967. He was stationed at Fort Lewis. W ash., and served tw o years active duty in G erm any. A fter being honorably discharged in 1973. G ivens w orked for the Burlington N orthern Railroad. He retired with a disability after 27 years o f service. Survivors include his sisters. D oris H endricks. Rose M artin and M ary G ivens; brothers Rayford and Fred G ivens, all o f Portland; and a host o f aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephew s and oth er friends and relatives. He was born in Florence, N. C .,a n d lived in Portland for m ore than 20 years. Mr. Smith was a self-em ployed childcare provider. Survivors include his com panion, Tracy W alker; daughter Joyce; son Jam es Jr.; and brothers O tis and Franklin. H arris, w ho d ied O ct. 6 at age 67. She w as born Dec. 11. 1935, in San A ntonio. She moved to Portland in 1964 and w as a laborer in the shipyards. Survivors include her son. He w as born July 6, 1975. He w orked for C ourtesy Janitorial, Nike and as an electrician for the O regon D epartm ent o f T ransportation. He will be cherished by his many fam ily and friends, especially his m other. M arnella M osley, w ho wrote the follow ing poem: Emanuel, you are a gift fr o m Cod, therefore I do not question your heavenly departure before me. F or / know without doubt it is a plan fro m G od fo r no m other should suffer this pain. This pain is fa r worse than the labor pain it took to bring you into this world, this one o f you leaving this world.
