O fficers said at least one occupant fired at them first as they approached the car. • Police said they returned the fire and the car sped off. and shots were fired from the car as it sped away. A pursuit came to an end when the car crashed into a pole at the intersec tion of North Portland Boulevard and 1-5. The two passengers were hos pitalized. No police were hurt. Names of the three were not immediately released. It was not immediately clear whether the man who died, described only as being of Asian descent, died from gun shot wounds or the crash. The shooting happened shortly aftermidnight. Police said they found two hand guns in the vehicle. Local men face 18 years in prison for plotting war (AP) — The final two defen dants in an alleged Portland terror ist cell who are in custody pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to levy war against the U.S. and agreed to serve 18 years in federal prison. Patrice Ford and Jeffrey Battle were among seven Portland-area residents charged with plotting to wage war against U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Their pleas avoided possible life terms and came after four other defendants had agreed to testify against them F o rd 's local attorney, Marc Sussman, said avoiding litigation on the constitutionality of provi sions of the Patriot Act was a pos sible motive for the government to offer reduced sentences. All but Ford, Battle and the fugi tive al Saoub pleaded guilty and agreed to serve terms ranging from three to 14 years. Speaking publicly for the first tim e since the alleged attack. Stephen Porter buried his head in his hands after telling reporters he had feared for his life. The assault allegedly happened as officers executed a search war rant at a home. Police Chief Robert Olson said marijuana and suspected cocaine were found during the raid. Porter, who was released with out being charged, received medi cal attention after reporting the assault. MayorR.T. Rybak, who appeared with Olson, said the two were "very concerned, and we take it very se riously.”
