Williams’ Sister Murdered

(AP) — A man w as arrested in the
shooting death o f a sister o f tennis
stars Venus and Serena W illiams, and
authorities searched for four other
possible suspects in the slaying o ut
side a house know n to attract gang
members.
Aaron M ichael H am m er, 24, was
booked for investigation o f m urder
late Sunday and ja ile d w ithout bail.
S h e riffs deputies said he had ties to
a gang but was not a m em ber.
Yetunde Price, 31, w as shot in the
chest early Sunday about a m ile from
the tennis courts w here her younger
sisters first rose to prom inence in this
gang- and violence-plagued city o ut
side Los Angeles.
The motive for the slaying remained
under investigation.
As many as four other possible
suspects were being sought. Deputy
Richard Pena said.
Price was killed by a gunman stand
ing in front o f a house that was known
to attract gang m em bers and where
drugs have been sold in the past,
authorities said.
“At this point we ju s t d o n ’t know
if this is gang or n arcotics," said
s h e riff s Lt. Daniel R osenberg, a ho
m icide detective. “ 1 can tell you there
are certain indications to suggest this
location has involved either gangs or
drugs. The house w as troublesom e to
both the residents in the com m unity
and the deputies in Com pton station.”

person roster to defend the American World
Cup championship.
Should the team advance, both players
will appear in front o f their hom etow n fans
on Oct. 5 at PGE Park for the W orld Cup
semifinals.
Three W om en’s World Cup doubleheaders
will take place at PGE Park on Sunday, Sept. 28;
Thursday, Oct. 2; and Sunday, Oct. 5.
The first matches will feature the powerful
Chinese team taking on Russia and Australia
battling Ghana.
Undefeated Vikings Open at Home
The Portland State Vikings open the
Big Sky Conference play Saturday at
PGE Park when they host the Northern
Arizona Lumberjacks.
PSU is the only Big Sky team without
a loss and returned to the pol Is this week,
ranked 22nd. The Vikings had a thrilling
44-37 win over Nichol Is State last Satur
day.
The Big Sky offensive player o f the
week was quarterback Joe Wiser, com
pleting 27 o f 3 5 passes for 392 yards and
two touchdowns. He also ran for two
scores in the win.
The co-defensive player o f the week
was free safety Jamal Abdullah after
making 16 tackles and returning a fumble
30 yards for a touchdown.

The man with Price w as uninjured
and drove her to a rela tiv e’s house,
w here he called 911, authorities said.
Price was then taken to a hospital,
w here she died.

ties discovered he w as on parole,
w hich he allegedly violated by being
at the scene o f the shooting. D epu
ties did not disclose why he was on
parole.
An assault rifle was found at the
scene, and neighbors reported hear
ing six to 20 gunshots.
Price, one o f five sisters who spent
th eir early years in C om pton, w as a
registered nurse who ow ned a beauty
salon. She also served as a personal
assistant to her fam ous half-sisters,
w ho m oved to Florida w ith their p ar
ents when they turned pro as teenag
ers.
Price w as divorced and had three
children, ages 5 ,9 and 11. She lived in
Corona, 40 m iles from Com pton.

Jefferson is a lack o f funds to pay for
trainers, equipment, uniforms and a
district-mandated “pay-to-play” fee
that many star athletes can’t afford.
According to school sports co
ordinators, athletics go hand in
hand with academics and good citi
zenship. Through participation in
athletics, students team skills- self-
discipline, goal setting, hard work,
motivation, leadership, and sacri
fice - that transfer to real life.
Registration fees are $150 for
individuals and $600 per four-per
son team. Hole sponsorships are
available for $1,500, $2,500 and
$5,000 and cart sponsorships are
available for$2,500.

Local Fighter Narrowly Defeated
Local fighter Reggie Davis was
narrowly beaten down by Sebastian
Valdez in a unanimous eight-round
decision Sept. 6 at the Lucky Eagle
Casino in Rochester, Wash.
Davis was sharp in the first three
rounds, opening up a major cut on
the bridge o f V aldez's nose. The
talent and skill ofboth fighters was
c lo se ly m a tch e d , b u t sev eral
punches below the belt may have
cost Davis the fight.
