Alder. This year’s event “Keeping It Real" promises to highlight the tal ents o f many award winning Port- land-based jazz and blues stars. Starring in the show and closing out the evening will be the R& B and Funk grooves of the award-win ning Linda Hombuckle Band. Linda has performed in many of the past Inner City Blues Festivals and is always a crowd favorite. Opening the festival will be the jazz/blues o f the Dave Fleschner Trio, featuring Ken Ollis on drums, Billy Hagen on guitar and the Hammond B3 organ stylings of Dave Fleschner. The trio plays a variety of original songs and stan dards in the tradition of J immy Smith, Jimmy McGriff and Portland’s own Billy Larkin and the Delegates. Next on the program is the Jim Mesi Band, featuring last year’s Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award winner for best vocalist, Mel Solomon. Mel started his singing careerinthe 1950s with Hank Ballard and The Midnighters and it was a pleasure to see him receive this well-deserved award. Following in order to “Keep It Real” is the ever-popular Norman S y lv ester B and, featu rin g La Rhonda Steele. Norman has been a main organizer of the Inner City Linda Hombuckle Blues Festival since it’s inception. Joining Norman will be veteran blues artist Raydell Clay and singer Linda Madison. R aydell Clay cu ltiv ated his rootsy R&B style working in many of the clubs such as G eneva’s, the Cotton Club, Niecies and Texas II which attracted blues and jazz fans to northeast Portland from the 1960s through the early 1990s. For the 14th straight year we are pleased to have as M aster o f Cer emonies, Paul Knauls. Paul is a long-time community activist, busi ness owner and the former owner of the Cotton Club and G eneva’s, Nightclub. , Tickets are $ 15 or two for $25 and may purchased in advance from Music Millennium, Geneva’s Shear Perfection, Reflections Bookstore, Doris Cafe and Dale A nn’s Ladds Inn or from members of the Rain bow Coalition. The Melody Ballroom features a full-service, no host bar, and due to Oregon liquor control regulations, no minors will be al lowed at the event. This year’s event will celebrate the 20th anniversary o f the R ain bow Coalition, which established a Portland chapter in 1983 through the efforts o f com m unity activ ists such as Beverly Stein, M aceo Pettis, Ron Herndon and form er State Sen. Bob Boyer. All pro ceeds will go to fund the on-go ing w ork o f the Rainbow C o ali tion and the Portland chapter o f Jobs W ith Justice. The Reparations, will play every Thursday at 9 p.m. with DJ Chill and special guest performers and DJs at The Red Sea, 318 S.W. Third Ave. Admission for those 21 and older is $5. A show featuring two northwest photographers, Dan Bronson and John McAnulty, will open at the Talis man Gallery, 1476 N.E. Alberta, on Thursday, March 27 with a reception from 5:30 p. m. to 9:30 p.m. Bronson explores the beauty of life by capturing infrared light on film to create surreal landscapes and figure studies with a sensuous yet classic quality. McAnulty shows the beauty of nature with highly saturated images of the northwest and southwestern deserts. Faces of Art and Psychology ‘Faces' by Gary Mac Smith will be showing through March 28 at Portland State University’s Liftman G al lery. Smith is a Portland psychiatrist specializing in individual psychotherapy. Back to the Doo Wop days Levi Stubbs, Renoldo “Obie” Benson, Abdul “Duke” Fakir and Lawrence Payton began marveling their audiences with an infectious blend of pure vocal power and sweet harmonies in 1954. Once they signed with Motown Records in the 60s as the Four Tops, the group churned out hit after hit eventually ending with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With 43 years of playing history, the group will play at Chinook Winds Casino on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $40 depending on seat location.
