O ne cold afternoon in C hicago, som eone handed h er a flier about a church that w as devoted to saving troubled lives through a com m it m ent to Christ. H ollins d id n ’t think m uch o f it, but held on to the little piece o f p aper anyw ay. O v er the course o f the next three m onths she w o u ld occasionally take the flier o u to fh e r purse, glance at it, then bury it again, preferring the m ind num bing high o f drugs to the cold slap o f reality. B ut one day, after w aking up to the w ailing o f her tw o so n s’ ig nored cries, she decided to do som e thing. H ollins called the num ber on the flier. “ I w as tired o f being on drugs,” she said. T he m an on the phone told her she d id n ’t need anything - except a little w illingness to change. “T h ey described it as a spiritual b oot cam p,” H ollins said. A few w eeks later, she w as on a bus to Portland and determ ined to turn her life around. W hen Hollins arrived in the ‘City o f R o ses’ she m et P astor Erskine Sias and his w ife, P astor Roxanne Sias, w ho m anage the Portland branch o f V ictory C hurch. Both are former drug addicts who n o w run a m inistry and tw o ‘resto ration h o m es’ com m itted to the service o f ‘the passed o ver and fo rg o tten .’ E rskine and Roxanne help m any people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. H ollins had been to 13 different tre a tm e n t c e n te rs, b u t n o th in g seem ed to w ork until she found Christ. “ It w as alw ays conditional,” she said. “ H ere, they o nly w ant you to know Jesus.” Hoi lins said she has found safety and stability in this house com m it ted to G o d ’s love. She is drug-free and telling others about w hat V ic tory C hurch has d one for her. “T h ey accepted m e into their hom e, and they d id n ’t know an y thing about m e,” she said. “E very thing about this hom e is about Je su s,” Erskine and Roxanne are com mit ted, caring pastors, dedicated full tim e to the teachings o f the bible. Roxanne tells the w om en that recovery is possible and the rew ard o f s o b rie ty is w ell w o rth th e struggle. “ I know w here I’ve been, I d o n ’t w ant to go back there,” she said o f her past riddled w ith drug addic tion. “ W hen 1 realize I d o n ’t have that craving anym ore - it is an aw e som e feeling.” H ollins w ants desperately to be back in the life o f h er sons, but for now she is taking care o f the chil dren that com e through the doors o f the church. “ 1 pray everyday to be the w om an and m other I should b e,” she said.
