Rose Franks sings with the spirit, the mind and the whole body during a Friday
night perform ance at the Rivergate Church, 4 7 3 7 N. Lombard. She will release
her second CD ‘Glory’ at the end o f February. In addition to her singing, Franks
volunteers at the Union Gospel Mission and several nursing homes. “ The Lord
has given me so much, ” she said. “I want to give back to others. ” Any church

Churches Seek to Help Haitians
Dress 2 Impress
Portland Metro Assembly of God is work­
ing closely with the First Haitian Christian
Church in Portland to bring relief to dozens of
Haitians in need.
“Face to Face" project members will bring
direct assistance to the people of Haiti in the
form of clothing, food and children’s church
services.
Haiti is an island in turmoil. Ripe with
hunger, political oppression, persecution and
unspeakable poverty, children in the country
are victimized through a lack of nutrition,
education and adequate health care.
The churches will be collecting contribu­
tions through Dec. 21. The mission is to bring

Church for two very special services. Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. the m en's
ministry will present ‘An Evening of Worship for Men’ with special guests
Dr. Johnny Pack IV and the fellowship MBC M en's Ministry. New Genera­

W rite Around Portland
Come hear the stories and poems of low-income writers from all over
Portland at the W rite Around Portland reading Sunday, Dec. 15 from 6
p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 1126 S.W. Park Ave.
Jesus, Son of M ary
Dr. Ron Hershel o f Corvallis will be presenting ‘Jesus: Son o f M ary’ as
part o f a lecture series entitled “The Evolution of Human Spirituality”.
Hershel, who has a master’s degree in physics and a doctorate in optical
science, touts his three great interests as science, psychology, religion
and spirituality. The presentation is free and will be held at the Portland
Baha'i Faith Center at 8720 N Ivanhoe, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Holiday Dignity Drive
The Church of Scientology of Portland will be collecting items for Dignity
Village this year. Most wanted items are; blankets, shampoo, soap, socks,
and personal items such as female products. The church will be accepting
items through Dec. 22 at 2636 N.E Sandy Blvd. For more information call

especially tuna are in high demand. Also,
toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste,
combs, brushes, deodorant, Band-Aids, as­
pirin - for children and adults - are needed.
Children in Haitian schools are also without
adequate school supplies.

Funeral services were held Nov. 22 for Edith May Bird who died Nov.
19,2002, at age 56.
Ms. Bird was bom Aug. 18,1946, inGalesburg, 111.She moved in 1982
to Portland, where she was a certified nursing assistant for a nursing
home. Survivors include her daughter, Nicole Camara; sons, Troy Curtis,
Neithan Stanley and Romando Stanley; sisters, Sharon Sheeley, Shirley
Selander, Linda Bloomfield, Barbara Perry, Martha Hatch and Nancy
Murrell; and nine grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes.
