Hayes died o f kidney failure at Shands Hospital on Sept. 18. He was hospitalized earlier this month and had also battled liver ailments and prostate cancer. “Bullet” Bob Hayes earned the title “W orld’s Fastest Human” and had such blazing speed as a re ceiver that he redefined the way pass defense is played in the NFL. But he later fell victim to drugs and alcohol and went to prison - one reason he never made it into the Pro Football Hall o f Fame. Cowboys ow ner Jerry Jones called Hayes an “American sports hero.” “He handled the triumphs and the setbacks with the same grace and humility,” Jones said. “He car ried the pride o f a champion in his heart at all times, and he always Sob Hayes in a 1970 photograph. had a smile for everyone.” At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Hayes won the gold medal in the 100 meters, tying the world record o f 10.05 seconds, and he anchored the U.S. 400-m eter relay team to victory in a world-record 39.06. H ayes’ relay split was an unof ficial 8.6. Nearly 20 years later, The Los Angeles Times called it “the most astonishing sprint ofall time.” “ His legacy will live on for our generation and younger genera tions,” five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones said. Robert Lee Hayes was bom in JacksonvilleonD ec.20,1942,and went on to become a track star at Florida A&M. In 1964, the Cowboys drafted him in the seventh round, taking a chance on an in cred ib ly fast sprinter with unrefined football skills. In his rookie season with the Cowboys, Hayes had 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading the NFL with an average o f 21.8 yards a catch. That showed his big-play abil ity, and Hayes’ world-class speed forced defenses - unable to cover him with traditional man-to-man schemes - to come up with many of the zone defenses that are com mon in today’s game. “The type o f game you see now is a game that Bob Hayes is more responsible for than any one per son,” said Tex Schramm, former Cowboys president and general manager. When Dallas won the 1972 Su per Bowl, Hayes became the only athlete to win an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl ring. More than 30 years later, h e’s still the only player with both. 2 4 HOUR EMERGENCY ROSE CITY HEATING & AIR INC. O nJuly6or7— when the former NBA player, his girlfriend and the skipper were last seen — the boat was sailing near the tiny island o f Maiao, west o f Tahiti, investigat ing judge Jean-Bernard Taliercio said Monday. Authorities studied how calls made from aboard inter acted with a satcl lite, tracking down the boat’s coordinates. French Polynesian officials have based their investigation on the suspicion that D ele’s brother, Miles Dabord, who had been trav eling with the group, was respon sible for the deaths o f Dele, his girlfriend Serena Karlan, and skip per Bertrand Saldo. Investigators believe the bod ies were dumped overboard. They have said they are searching for bodies in the South Pacific, though they don't have much hope o f find ing anything more than 10 weeks since the disappearances. Dabord, inacom ainaCalifom ia hospital, has not been charged in the United States in connection with the disappearances. After his com panions vanished, he spent a b o u t tw o w ee k s in F ren ch Polynesia before flying home. Dabord, form erly known as Kevin Williams, aroused suspicion when he signed his brother’s name to try to buy $ 152,000 worth ofgold in Phoenix. After he was discov ered in a coma in Tijuana, Mexico on Sept. 14, Dabord was arrested on suspicion o f impersonating his younger brother. With chances o f Dabord’s re covery growing slimmer, second hand testimony from his former girlfriend becomes more important. Erica W eise joined Dabord briefly on the island o f Moorea after the disappearances. After returning home, she informed authorities that Dabord had told her o f an onboard struggle that left his companions dead, investigators said. Tahitian judicial authorities arc planning to send investigators to the United States to try to speak to Weise and Dabord, if he wakes from his coma.
