Denny’s Supports Civil Rights
‘Preemie’ Reunion Draws Crowd
D enny's restaurants has pre­
sented a check for $ 1 million to the
National Civil Rights Museum in
Memphis, Tenn.

plauded enthusiastically when
H ood-Phillips o f D enny’s an ­
nounced that Tom Joyner, as well
as o th e rs ac ro ss the n atio n .

Almost 700 people attended
a ‘preem ie’ reunion for all ba­
bies who were cared for in the
Providence St. Vincent Neona­
tal Intensive Care Unit.
The recent event enabled par­
ents to meet other parents and
share advice and stories about
raising these special babies. It
also allowed hospital staff to re­
unite with some of the children
they have cared for and see their
development.

African American wellness is the emphasis for
the 2002 Wellness Village scheduled for Saturday,
Oct. 19 at the Oregon Association of Minority
EntrepreneursPlaza,2800N. Vancouver, Suite 100.
The event is expected to draw more than one
thousand people. Participants can take advantage
o f free health screenings, free workshops, and free
health exhibits.
The health fair is an all out effort to close the
health gap on a variety o f diseases that plague the
African American community.
African Americans are 30 percent more likely to
die o f heart disease and 40 percent more likely to
die o f stroke than whites. African American babies
are dying at twice the rate of non-African American
babies and African Americans are 30 percent more
likely to die from cancer than whites.

The W ellness Village will include dental
screening and work; blood lead level testing;
anemia testing; foot massage and foot care;
testing for glucose, blood pressure and urine
protein; flu and tetanus shots; HIV and hepatitis
C testing; vision and hearing tests; stroke as­
sessment; glaucom a screening; a bloodmobile,
door prizes and music.
