Almost 11 percent of 8th graders and 20 percent of 11 th grad ers said other adults furnished them with alcohol. Shoulder tap ping is a common method used by minors to obtain alcohol. They wait outside stores until a witling adult ’ goes inside and makes the buy for 1 them. "These are alarming statistics,” said Pamela S. Erickson, Oregon Liquor Control Com m ission director. “And that’s why I’ve asked our regula tory division to focus more effort on illegal furnishing o f alcohol.” She said adults who furnish al cohol to minors face a $350 fine on the first misdemeanor conviction. According to a recent survey by Oregon’s Department of Hu man Services, almost 16 percent of 8th graders and 33 percent of high school juniors who drink, said they obtain alcohol from their friends.
