Adidas is one of the largest buyers o f kangaroo leather worldwide, which it uses mainly in the production o f high quality soccer boots. Protestors claim that the animals suffer needlessly as they are hunted and slaughtered. The protesters advocate the use o f synthetics. Adidas maintains that guidelines for proper and humane treatment of the animals are strictly followed. photo by M ark W ashington /T he P ortland O bserv er Black Wealth Grows But Still Far Behind Other Americans (A P) — Black A m ericans are earning m ore than ever, but they lack investm ent experience that could help them accum ulate m ore m oney, according to a report re leased T h u rsd ay by co n su m er ad vocates. The C onsum er Federation o f A m erica, Bank o f A m erica Foun dation and B E T .com , an arm o f Black Entertainment Television, are starting “ Black A m erica Saves” to help w age-earners pursue savings and investm ent plans. The program will offer free fi nancial planning advice and infor mation. “This may be the first generation o f black A m ericans who are able to accum ulate w ealth,” said Debra L. Lee, president o f Black Entertain ment Television. "The com m unity just needs to focus on it m ore.” The report found that m edian household w ealth am ong blacks grew 321 percent betw een 1989 and 1998, from S3.680 in 1989 to $15,500. H ow ever, that still w as less than a quarter o f the $71,700 accum ulated by the typical A m eri can household. C o n s u m e r F e d e r a tio n o f America Director Stephen Brobeck said blacks have not taken full advantage o f investm ent and sav ings opportunities, in part because their fam ilies have little historical experience with financial planning. The report found 24 percent o f black A m ericans said they spend m ore than their incom e, com pared to 14 percent o f all Americans. And 32 percent o f black A m ericans say they do not save, com pared to 23 percent o f all A m ericans.
