Sponsored by the Bahai Faith of Portland, the event was a vehicle to prom ote greater acceptance of others’ ethnicity and to break down the “walls” of prejudice. Church Honors Gospel Music Family The Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church will be having an “Appreciation Musical Gala” in honor of their Minister of M u sic, Lorene V. W ilder and her organ playing daughter, Roslyn Wilder-Cain. Wilder has served as the Min ister of Music at the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church for the past 15 years. For over fifty years, she has achieved many accomplishments: Music Direc tor for the Portland District Sun day School, BTU & U shers Con gress; musician for the General Baptist Convention of the North west, musician for the Portland District Association, musician Pastor Offers Positive Influence to Troubled Kids Rev. Frederick Woods closely identifies with Job of the Bible. W hat could test his faith more than devoting his life to saving young people from the streets? “Woods," as his friends call him, left behind his own addiction to drugs and crime nine years ago and is now an ordained minister. He also left his paying job to enter Providence Portland M edical Center’s Pastoral Care Residency Program, while also keeping up with a program he founded. Posi tive Youth Development, chal- lenging kids 12 to 18-years-old to succeed in school and stay off the street. Woods attends deaths, con soles those in anguish or fear, and counsels those with addictions. “You learn about yourself, what triggers your emotions and how to be more aware of your preju dices,” Woods said. ‘T o put your personal biases aside and pro vide emotional and spiritual guid ance for people from different cultures is an amazing experience.” Not only has the rigors of his residency challenged him to de velop his skills as a professional. Woods credits his supervisor and colleagues for providing support and guidance through some tough personal challenges, including the death of his father in November. M otivated by his desire to share his past and present experi ences, Woods entered the Pasto ral Care Residency Program with hopes of using his education to provide support and guidance to at-risk youth through Positive Youth Development. Rev. Frederick Woods is part o f the Providence Portland Medical Center's Pastoral Care Residency Program and has developed his own program called Positive Youth Development. for gospel groups, musician for funeral directors, and many other gospel music events. All are invited to come and share in this time of honoring and appreciating these two tal ented family musicians. About 350,000 people gathered for the Mass, the highlight of the pope ’ s 24-hour visit to Guatemala.
