City commissioner Jim Francesconi (from left), Charles Jordan o f the Portland Parks and Recreation Department, and Gary
DeStefano o f Nike join kids at Grant park to introduce the company's donation o f new world-class cushioned surfaces at 90
basketball courts in the city's park system.
N ike will help the cash-strapped
Portland Parks Bureau by using
recycled shoes to resurface the
w eed-infested basketball courts
at 35 parks.
The donation is estim ated to
cost more than $2 mi I lion and could
also include the replacem ent o f
roughly 130 backboards. It repre
sents N ike’s largest one-time sports
surface donation in the world.
T he project should begin in
sum m er and be com pleted by late
fall. W orkers will resurface the
courts using a material that’s m ade
from ca st-o ff shoes. The shoes
are ground up and pressed into a
m aterial that will be laid over the
courts.
T he sam e quality o f surface is

donation to celebrate its 30lh anni
versary as a Portland area em
ployer.
“ By refurbishing the courts
w ith a w orld-class, cu shioned

Fire Player Slowed
by Injured Heel
(A P ) — Portland Fire coach
Linda H argrove is searching for
an an sw e r to Ja c k ie S tile s ’
troubles.
Stiles, the W N B A ’s rookie o f
the year last season, has been
slow ed by bursitis pain in her
right heel through the F ire’s first
eleven gam es. A t one point,
Stiles even sat out four gam es to
rest her heel.
But since com ing back June
15th, she has only averaged
seven-point-five points a gam e,
far from the 15 points per gam e
she averaged as a rookie last
year.
H argrove says that perhaps
the best w ay to m axim ize S tiles’
perform ance in gam es would be
to lim it her tim e practicing, thus
keeping the Fire star from hav
ing to use her heel m ore than
necessary.
In
p r e p a r a tio n
fo r
W ednesday’s gam e against the
Utah Starzz, w ho are m aking a
run at the W estern Conference,
Stiles only practiced lightly.
H argrove, the Fire, and o f
course Stiles, hope less practice
equals m ore points in the game.
