B eckett has found that am ong the black com m unity there's m is trust o f a w hite dom inated medical establishm ent. T he stigm a asso ciated w ith having a child diag nosed w ith A D H D , and a general shortage o f black health provid ers are keeping parents from seek ing effective treatm ent. T he problem for black families is particularly troubling Beckett said, because overall “A frican A m eric an s are rec eiv in g less health care.” T h e study also qu estio n s a society ripe w ith social and cul tural prejudices. C ase in point is the story o f tw o m iddle school students, both d i agnosed with A D H D w ho were recently nabbed for shoplifting at a local departm ent store. O ne child w as black, the other white. “T he store called the parents o f the w hite kid and sent him hom e,” said Judy K endall, the stu d y ’s project director. But the black child w as sent to juvenile detention, and then his parents w ere called. A n A frican A m erican grand m other o f a child w ith AD HD said o f th is n eg a tiv e stereo ty p in g , “perhaps one o f the reasons m ore A fr ic a n A m e r ic a n b o y s a re crim inalized for th eir behavior is because o f a lack o f diagnosis and treatm ent o f A D H D in our com - , m unity. Instead o f seeing a child in need o f help, they ju st see a bad black kid.” R esults o f the study should be com pleted next m onth if every thing goes according to plan. K endall w ants black families to know that their participation in the study m ight really pay o ff for the A frican A m erican com m unity as a whole. She said a dozen o r so black fam ilies are still needed to partici pate in the study. For more inform ation, call 503- 4944122.
