Fraternity Takes Time to Give Back by J krome M outon F or T he P ortland O bserver In recognition of Earth Day, the brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, along with other volunteers, participated in a neighborhood clean-up effort on both sides of Northeast Alberta, from 15th to 33rd, and from Prescott to Ainsworth. The group walked through the neighborhoods picking up litte r and c o lle c tin g recyclables. The effort was very tiring, but also very fulfill- ing. By the d a y ’s end there were a few sore backs and legs among the group. The Omega Psi Phi Frater nity was founded in 1911 at Howard University. The group’s motto is “friend ship is essential to the soul.” In addition to social action efforts, like neighborhood c le a n u p s, the c h a p te r also gives out 40 to 50 food b askets to needy fam ilies at C hristm as tim e, aw ards three $500 scholarships to stu dents annually and mentors stu dents. The brothers are com m it ted to providing positive lead ership and m entorship in the Portland community, with the purpose of continuing to work to help make a difference in the lives of people, especially kids. D uring the 2001 sum m er a total o f 760 students com pleted the 24-day program during June and July. Students showed sta tistically significant gains in all goal areas, at all grade levels.
