Calls for peace and justice issue were heard Friday during a downtown Portland rally addressing the violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Former State Rep. M archers circled P ioneer Square, chanting against the m ilitary actions o f A riel S h aro n ’s governm ent, and the policies o f the U nited States, w hom they claim favor the Israeli occupation and use o f force. D em o n strato rs w ove P alestin ian flags, handed out fliers, and displayed signs, som e show ing pictures o f Israeli s o ld ie rs b e a tin g P a le s tin ia n s and young children cow ering from gunfire. The Israeli governm ent has claim ed the checkpoints and occupation are n ec essary to defend itself against suicide bom bers, calling them terrorists and d e claring negotiations useless under such circum stances. A few pro-Israeli dem onstrators also attended. O ne man held a sign which read, "A rafat and Bin Laden, Tw in T ow ers o f T erro r." A nother man passed out pam phlets condem ning the Arab treatm ent of Jew s over hundreds o f years. T he m arch ev e n tu a lly c o n d en sed around a podium w here various speakers echoed the stance o f the crow d, and call ing for an “immediate withdrawal o f Israeli troops from Palestinian cities, tow ns, and population centers.” Mazen Malik, an Arab American, spoke o f a situation so degraded, “am bulances were being shot at". He continued, “W ith out justice, there can be no peace.” Those w ords becam e a m antra for the crow d, w hich thundered with drum m ing and enthusiastic applause. Recent Israeli policies have stated how ever that there will be no peace until the suicide bombers have been contained. The responsibility for this containm ent has largely been placed on the shoulders of Palestinian leader Arafat, w ho has re peatedly been warned to reign in the bombers or face military insurgencies. Form er State Rep. Joann B ow m an of northeast Portland spoke as w ell, call ing for an end to the violence and pro tection o f civil liberties. O ne Jew ish man said he loved the Jew ish people, but he also said he “loved the P alestin ians just as m uch.” H is com m ents w ere m et w ith a p plause and cheering.
