Zion Baptist Church, 831 N.E. Fremont. The program o f music and story telling will commemorate the faithful endurance many American Christians of African ancestry have displayed from slavery to the present. M usic guests include the Grant High School Gospel Choir, the H arriet Tubm an Middle School Choir and soloist Ms. Lorene Wilder. The program is co-sponsored by Open Door Communication Ministries. Enjoy an uplifting performance, AmeriCorps volunteers began Martin Luther King Day by teach ing “Babysitter Training” and “When I’m In Charge” skills to over 400 Portland area kids, ages 7 to l5 . The course developed by the Red C ross and taught at the organization ’ s Oregon Trail Chap ter on North Vancouver Avenue teaches babysitting skills and re sponsibilities, supervising sib lings, handling emergency situa tions and basic first aid. Alecia Lightfoot - a graduate of the “When T m In Charge” pro gram, offered this advice: “To all o f you who are here today to take the class - pay attention! I did and it helped save my life.” Alecia was 11 years old when she saved her niece, nephew and herself when a kitchen fire started in their home. Her mother, Mary Edmeades, th anked the R ed C ro ss and AmeriCorps for the special train- o b itu a r ie s Lynda L. Raffelson Lynda L. Raffelson died Jan. 25,2002, at age 64. Mrs. Raffelson was bom Lynda L. Lyon on Feb. 18, 1937, in Longview, Wash. She moved as a child to Port land. She was a bookkeeper for various companies in the Northwest before retiring. In 1956, she married Mel V.E. Raffelson. Survivors include her hus band; son, MelVem E.; broth ers, Paul Momberg and Walt M om berg; sister, Cathy McElroy; father and step mother Lance L. and Pat Lyon; and seven grandchil dren. Spirituality and Aging Studied A conference on spirituality and aging under the theme “Liv ing and Dying in Hope” has been scheduled by the Archdiocese of Portland’s Office for Ministry to the Aging. Gospel Music Extravaganza Feb. 16 Portland Community College will present the 18'h annual G os pel M usic Extravaganza at New Song Com m unity Church, 2511 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Rev. Richard Probasco will lead this special and high-energy ex travaganza, which will have the N. ewly O . rg an ized theme of “In God We Trust.” In addition, 25 choirs from the Port land area will perform, including Viz-u-lyze, Genesis, Disciples in Song, Sophisticated Gents, Maria Miles and En-touch. The extravaganza celebrates the joy o f song in the African American community and is a pi v- otal way of honoring Black His tory Month. McCowan who died Jan. 12, 2002, at age 78. Mr. McCowan was bom Jan. 9, 1924, in Jackson, Miss. He came to Portland while working for the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1940s He was a truck driver for many different companies, re tiring in 1993. S urvivors include his daughter, Gwen; sons, Troy and Marian; sisters, Willie Lou and Connie; brother, George; and 10 grandchildren. Service held. A rrange ments by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes. Archie L. Davis Funeral services were held Jan. 16 Northwest Commu nity Fellowship Church in Vancou ver for Archie L. Davis who died Jan. 10, 2002. Mr. Davis was an Army veteran of World War II and Korea who retired after 32 years as a pot tender for Alcoa. He was bom June 9, 1919, in Clanton, Ala., and lived in Clark County for 54 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Irene. Survivors include five daughters, Tarline Davis, Marilyn M erfeld, Theresa Murphy and Diane Davis, all of Vancouver, and Pamela Davis of Portland; five sons, Alfred Bell of Bremerton and Joseph Bell, Benny Davis, Gregory Davis and Archie L. D avis J r., all of V ancouver; one brother, A ndrew L. D avis o f Vancouver; 19 grandchil dren; and 12 great-grand children. A rrangem ents were by Vancouver Funeral Chapel.
