Piearson was bom Jan. 5, 1950 in Winfield, La., the daughter of Ollie Mae and Ardmore Canton. She was called home to rest on Dec. 29,2001. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, a backlash o f anti-Islamic senti ment has played out across the United States, ranging from the defacing o f mosques to the harassm ent o f M iddle-Eastern taxi cab drivers. M o st A m e ric a n s d e c ry these actions and, in response, have shown an intense interest in learning more about Islam and its followers. Washington State University V ancouver’s Diversity Task Force is responding to that inter est by inviting leaders and stu dents from the Muslim com m u nity in the Portland-Vancouver area to host an interactive dis cussion about Islam, its tenets and common misconceptions associated with this 1,400-year- oldreligion. The discussion is set for 7 p.m., M onday, Jan. 28, in the W SU V ancouver lecture hall. The panel o f speakers en courages hard-hitting questions from the audience and prom ises frank responses to audi ence questions about Islam and its practice. Featured speakers include: Dr. Shahriar Ahmed, president o f the Bilal M osque A ssocia tion in Beaverton; M adiha Sul tan, an undergraduate student at Portland State University; and W aasel Kareem , a senior at Jesuit High School in Port land. M e m b e rs o f th e W S U V ancouver faculty also will com m ent on the role o f wom en in Islam and the view o f Islam from a Judeo-C hristian per spective. In 1988, she moved to Portland. She was a member of St. Luke Memorial C.O.G.I.C. and a board member at Port City Development Center. She leaves to mourn her mother. Ollie Mae Canton; brothers, Ardmore Canton Jr., James Canton, Berry Canton, Henry Canton, and Shephard Canton; sisters, Carrie Fordan, Delorse Gunn and Audrey Canton-Kyom; her children, Taft Washington Jr., Michele Canton and Michael Canton; grandchildren, Kayla Moody, Michael Canton II, Shaunice Washington, Brianna Sabb and Brittany Sabb; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Christ made her free. Portland Center Promotes Racial Harmony Race unity will be the topic o f a talk at the Portland B aha’ i C enter at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. The speakers are an inter racial couple from southeast Portland, Laila and Yohannes Murphy. L aila’s father is Persian and her mother is European-Ameri can. Y o h a n n e s ’ m o th er is Ethopian and his father is A f rican-A m erican. “In honor o f M artin Luther King Day, our presentation will focus on racial unity and har m ony and will include m usic,” L aila said. Laila studied flute and m usi cal theater at N orthw estern University inEvanston, 111, while singing, acting, and playing guitar are m ajor focuses o f Y ohanne’s life.
