(A P) - G ov. John K itzhaber em barked on a

flying after the recent terrorist attacks he w ould
continue to take flights that w ere im portant for

K itzhaber said the effects o f the Sept. 11 attacks
on the W orld T rade C enter and the Pentagon “ has
been to stop people from doing w hat they need to
do on a daily basis.
“ O regon is a trading state,” he said, “and our
relation w ith A sia is extrem ely im portant.”
T he D em ocratic governor said he w ould b e in
constant contact w ith O regon and had arranged
for a backup m ilitary transport to return to the state
should it b e needed in the case o f an em ergency.
But he said he did not anticipate needing it.
T he governor planned to visit O regon com pa
nies operating in the tw o countries and to attend
trade shows.
In som e w ays, he said, his trip is sym bolic,
sending the m essage that O regon w ould continue
to do business.
K itzhaber said that although re-establishing
direct com m ercial flights betw een Portland and
A sia rem ains a priority, he does n ot have talks w ith
A sian airlines scheduled during the trip.
