Se radicalizan huelgas y protestas contra el ajuste
Buenos Aires (AFP) - La protesta
social cobró ayer nueva fuerza en
Argentina, al iniciarse tres días de
huelgas y b arricad as contra el
draconiano a ju ste fiscal, que el
Gobierno A rgentino se em peña en
profundizar para conseguir más
ayuda del FMI.
M ientras tom aba form a la nueva
o la de p r o te s ta s c a lle je r a s y
paralizaciones de tareas en el sector
estatal, el índice líder MerVal de la
bolsa caía 2,50% , con el riesgo-país
saltando de 1.426 a 1.497 puntos
básicos (14,97%), respecto del lunes,

M ore than 13.3 m illion im m i­
grants arrived in the United States
during the 1990s, changing the
face o f schools and com m unities
not only on A m erica’s Shores,
but in its m idsection as w ell, the
Census B ureau reported. N early
one-fifth o f A m erica’s school-
age children now speak a lan­
guage other than English at home,
and that hom e is more likely to be
outside the states im m igrants
have settled in, the bureau said.
T he increase in im m igration
means that approxim ately 44 per­
cent o f the nation’s total im m i­
grant population o f 30.5 m illion
arrived in the U nited States in the
1990s, the bureau reported. O ver­
all, the imm igrant population now
accounts for about 11 percent o f
the co u n try ’s household popu­

ures that show ed the L atino popu­
lation grew 58 percent o v er the
1990s, to 35 m illion. L atinos now

n atio n ’s largest m inority group.

While the survey did not pro­
vide estimates o f undocumented
immigrants, an Immigration and
Naturalization Service survey
places the number o f illegal aliens
in the country' at about 7 million.
