L aei eor the P ortlasd O bserver Muslims in Oregon and through out the world will observe Ramadan around the 27th o f N ovem ber. Ramadan is the 9 month o f the Islamic Lunar calendar which occurs about 11 days earlier each year. The onset o f a Lunar month comes with the first sig h tin g o f its c re sc e n t m oon. Ramadan like other Lunar months lasts for 29 or 30 days based on the sighting o f the crescent moon o f the month after.Over one billion M us lims throughout the world observe Ramadan. Fasting during Ramadan provides Muslims with a key experi ence in their faith. It is one o f the five basic pillars o f Islam. The other four are Shahadah or the declaration o f faith in Allah as the only God and in Mohammed as His servant and mes senger, Salat or daily prayer, Zakat or giving obligatory charity, and Hajj or the pilgrimage to Mecca. Fasting is an obligatory act for all physically and mentally able Mus lims, but there are exceptions, includ ing women who are menstruating, pregnant, or nursing and those who are sick or traveling. A Muslim is allowed to break fasting and compen sate later whenever there is a health danger. T he center also seeks w inter coats for its clients. The non-profit provides certain basic needs to fam ilies and indi viduals throughout O regon and Southw est W ashington. A ll able- bodies adults and youths are asked to volunteer in exchange for ser vices. E xecutive D irector L eslie C lark said a sizable increase in dem and this fall has stretched the c e n te r’s resources to its lim it. “ W e served alm ost 1,000 people last m onth, w hich is huge for u s,” C lark said. “M onetary donations though U nited W ay and from other sources allow us to m aintain a strong operation, but we also need donations o f food and clothing to continue fulfilling our m ission.” Individuals w ho w ould like to m ake a donation should visit the L.I.F.E. They congratulate each other that they were able to complete their fasting and extend greetings even to those with whom they are in dispute, starting a new page o f love and respect. Indeed, the fast-breaking celebra tion is a time for joy and reunion on both family and community levels. People w ear new clothes, children get their gifts, and family and friends come together for large meals. Al though Ramadan is short, it may be considered as a time for gathering energy to act positively toward fam ily and society in the future. Ramadan helps Muslims adapt to a new style oflife, and fills them with a renewed sense o f honesty and enthusiasm to work hard, feeling their responsibility towards others. However, parents are en couraged to train their children how to fast at an early age so that when they are older and obligated to fast, it’s not such a difficult task. For Muslims, Ramadan fasting represents one o f the significant ex periences in their faith. It is a personal act aimed at obedience to Allah and seeking the right perception o f Him. Muslims look at Ramadan as a month o f joy and blessing, not a month o f starvation and unwelcome self-denial as some might think. It is the month in which the Q ur’ an (Mus lim Holy Book) was revealed to be a guide for mankind. Fasting during Ramadan brings the community to gether into one act and one feeling. All Muslims, regardless oftheircolor, gender or economic status, come to gether for this collective worship. They do it sincerely for Allah and Allah only. There is no authority to check if a person is fasting or not. Thus fasting may be thought o f as a test o f faith and honesty. It is really a wonderful yearly comprehensive program with a lot o f positives.
