Workplace Diversity
Self-directed profiles aimed at helping people
understand how they think, act, and relate to others
B usinesses, churches, and or
ganizations can learn about diver
sity in the w orkplace through one-
day w orkshops offered by G eorge
F o x U n iv e r s ity ’s d ir e c to r o f
m ulticultural services.
The program , “ B ridges to U n
derstanding E xploring D ifferences
in the W orkplace,” helps em ploy
ees and organization m em bers learn
how they personally react to d iv er
sity issues, including gender, e th
nic, and m ulticultural differences.
Positive perspectives on those d if
ferences are suggested.
Daryl Dixon, George Fox’s direc
tor o f m ulticultural services since
1999, will teach the four-hour work-
sh o p s to b e o f f e r e d at th e

scheduled for groups o f various
type and sizes. W ork site presenta

D ixon had previously presented
the program for school districts,
governm ent agencies, businesses
and ch u rc h e s. L ast sp rin g , all
George Fox employees participated
in the diversity w orkshop led by
Dixon.
This the first time Dixon will lead
w orkshops open to the public.
Each workshop includes five ses
sions, each focusing on a different
aspect o f diversity aw areness. Par
ticipants take the “ D iscovering D i
versity Profile,” w hich assesses in
dividual attitudes and reactions to
a num ber o f diversity issues. The
confidential, self-directed profile
aims to help participants under
stand how they think, act, and re
late to others.
Social Security

People can now apply for Social
Security retirement benefits on the
Internet at www.ssa.gov. the Social
Security A dm inistration’s website.
To meet customer service goals,
the agency has adapted its business
practices to meet the changing needs
o f the people it serves.
With the 76 million-strong baby
boom generation before them, the
SSA wants to achieve state-of-the-
art service. According to a study by
Jupiter Communications, 14 million

Convention Center
Prepares For Expansion
The Oregon Convention Center
will break ground in its new 370,000
square foot expansion in February.
The project recently reached a
major milestone when the City o f
Portland Planning Commission unani
mously approved the schematic de
sign for the facility.

prejudices and stereotypical
attitudes that individuals may

miss, which is why m ost diver
sity in itia tiv e s f a il,” said
Dixon.
