Investigators said Sunday’s fires, near an apartment com plex at 924 Hylen Way, may be linked to at least 34 arsons set in the V ancouver area over several months. The man arrested is one o f several authorities have under suspicion as a “person o f interest.” Authorities plan to decide Tuesday whether to charge him in the Sunday fires. The 52-year-old suspect was ques tioned Sunday night for several hours. Police picked up the man after two witnesses pointed him out because they saw him near the Dumpsters be fore and after the time the Sunday fires started. The m an was arrested on dan gerous weapons charges after police found a steak knife in his pocket. The string o f arsons— some ofw hich have targeted home — has residents and business owners in V ancouver rattled. “It’s kind o f scary because, I mean, the dum pster’s not that far from our build F ederal in sp ecto rs h av e ch arg ed the O reg o n Z oo w ith v io la tin g the A n im al W elfare A ct a fte r in v e sti g a tin g a lle g a tio n s o f e le p h a n t ab u se. The d river attem pted to elude and at one point crashed into a stop sign and drove through a yard at North ing,” said appartm ent manager Toni Kapton. “A nd so it was kind o fa relief it was the dumpster. Still, that’s just a little bit too close.” Investigators said another fire was set in a dum pster just up the street at 7511 highway 99 in Vancouver. Authorities believe a single serial arsonist set som e tw o-dozen fires, in cluding several that targeted homes. The arson spree is the worst in the city’s history, Bivins said. The total toll o f the fires: m ore than $500,000. V ancouver officials will guarantee a minimum $ 10,000reward for informa tion leading to the conviction o f the serial arsonist. O f the $ 10,000 reward, $2,000came from community members. Police set up an arson tip line: (360)759- 4412. A rson experts aren’t surprised that the fires w ere growing m ore seri ous — from targeting trash containers a m onth ago to setting homes ablaze last weekend. Experts say arsonists can get a thrill out o f watching an out- of-control fire. To feed the thrill, they set bigger fires. “They like to see the fire,” said Lt. Je ff Larson, arson investigator for the Oregon State Police. “ They get some sort o f a thrill out o f fires, and that’s where you talk about starting out small and needing to build bigger and bigger fires because they want to see more ” W e a re n o t d is tre s s e d a b o u t h is 1 0 -y e a r-o ld b e lie f s ,” sa id B o n n ie T in k e r. “ W e are d is tr e s s e d a b o u t h is in a b ility to a c c e p t re s p o n s ib ility fo r th o se s ta te m e n ts to d a y an d to a c c e p t r e s p o n s ib ility fo r th e ir p o litic a l i m p a c t in th e r e a l w o r l d . ” K ro e k e r h a s a lre a d y ta k e n ste p s to m en d h is re la tio n sh ip w ith the g ay an d le s b ia n co m m u n ity .
