Kellers ofT uscum bia, Alabama, are
a family incrisis. Theireight-year-old
daughter H elen has been blind, deaf
and m ute since she w as 18 months
old, and her m ost consistent foim o f
com m unication is to grab, tear and
scratch violently at anything, or any­
one handy. Captain and Kate Keller
feel such tremendous love and pity
for H elen that they indulge her eveiy
whim. T he result is that they have lost
any sem blance o f peace in their hom e
and son Jam es bitterly resents how
m uch attention is lavished o n his half-
