In addition to the Fair w ill be the 9th annual Free B asketball Clinic. T he basketball clinic is open to the first 500 registrants boys and girls ages 7-18. A ll youth registered for the Clinic will automatically get at the end o f the day a backpack filled w ith v a r io u s s c h o o l s u p p lie s . R egistration is from 9 a .m .-10 a.m. Twenty new banners will unfurl on NE Alberta Street this month. Each one is large and colorful, representing various cultures that parallel the m ulti-cultural feeling o f the street. A short dedication cerem ony will celebrate the hanging o f the banners. Scheduled for Saturday, Septem ber 16lh, at 11:45 during the A lberta Street Fair. T he dedication will take place on the main stage (21s' and Alberta). The new banners w ere made possible by a grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council to the arts group, A rt on A lberta. Judge Cornw ell was selected by the panel for her e x p e rtise an d h e r co m m itm e n t to th e n e ig h b o rh o o d . She ow ned Judee M oonbeam ’s Fibre A rt Studio on Alberta Street for three years before m oving to K illingsw orth and M allory. She was helped by several neighborhood students: Shaneika W arden, M aurice C arter and B ridget Lovett. C ornw ell’s m otifs w ere inspired by patterns and im ages from an A frican M aasi w arrior’s shield, a M ayan tem ple, an O sage blanket, a Celtic key design, a C hinese dragon to name a few. To quote Judee M oonbeam (Comwell) “T he cultures I ’m m ost interested in had to share space to honor a few others. I need to m ake a m illion m ore banners to cover all b ases. CH W s are members ofthe communities they serve. T hey are recruited not only for their skills, know ledge, and abilities, but also for the experience and cu ltu ral b ac k g ro u n d th ey sh are w ith th eir com m unities. C H W s provide cultural m ediation betw een com m unities and the health care system ; provide inform al counseling and social support; organize com m unities; advocate for individuals and com m unities; provide health education; and assure that people get the services they need. For the past 6 w eeks, 13 new CH W s have participated in the first full-length curriculum for CH W s in the N orthw est. T he curriculum is divided into three parts: skill base, orientation to the health social service system , and health issues. Thanks to a cooperative agreem ent with Portland C om m unity College, the C H W s received 16 academ ic credits. These credits can be applied to an undergraduate degree program. The C H W s received recognition and certificates o f academ ic credit at a graduation cerem ony on A ugust 2 5 ,2 0 0 0 at PCC C ascade C am pus. The Portland City Council voted to appoint urban designer Lloyd D. Lindley to the Portland Design Com m ission fora four- yearterm . Mr. Lindley is a registered landscape architect (ASLA). He com pleted w ork on the K ing N eighborhood Com m ercial D evelopm ent Strategy, W ashington Square Regional Center Plan and Low er Burnside A rea R edevelopm ent Plan. Recent ,jects also include an urban design evaluation o f the Broadway rridor in Vancouver, Canada to determ ine whether SkyTrain, jht Rail T ransit or Rapid Bus should serve this corridor.
