Oregon Mountain Bike Trails

south o f Corvallis.. .or the Oregon
Vortex, a spot between Grants Pass
and Medford where the normal laws
o f physics seem to have been
r e p e a le d ...o r “C aptain J a c k ’s
Stronghold,” a lava desert on the
Oregon-California border where a
band o f 50 Modoc Indians fought
off the U.S. Army for two years in
the 1870s...or S tein’s Pilar, a
dramatic rock spire souring 350
feet above the Ochoco Mountains.
Highberger, a native Oregonian,
originally wrote about these places
in a series o f articles for The
Bulletin, a daily newspaper in Bend.
Although the places Highberger
describes are “off the beaten track,”
m ost a re n ’t very far o ff they
generally can be reached by car, or
with a short hike. They’re the quiet,

the perfect trail.
