Contract negotiations could be settled
if city used the $ 1 million fire budget
surplus
Portland firefighters announced their
resolve to protect the integrity o f the
city’s fire inspection process, which
is under attack by city commissioners.
“We have a professional, full-time
staff o f fire inspectors who do a great
job,” said Tom Chamberlain, president
o f th e P o rtla n d F ire F ig h te rs
Association (PFFA).
“ It does not serve anyone’s interest
to cut that team o f professional and
dilute the inspection process. We
also th in k th at m a in tain in g or
expanding the existing inspection fee
amounts to double taxation process.
Property taxes already pay for fire
inspection service.”
The Portland City Council has made
fire inspections part o f contract
negotiations that have dragged on

The Portland City Council refuses to
use part o f contract negotiations that
have dragged on for several months
with the firefighters’ union. The PFFA
bargaining team recently voted
unanimously to reject the city’s latest
contract offer primarily because o f
the fire inspection issues.
Chamberlain said the City Council
refuses to use part o fa $ l million Fire
Bureau budget surplus to settle our
c o n ta c t if we w ould agree to
terminating the full-time inspection
fee,” he said.
“ But instead o f using part o f that $1
million surplus, the City Council
wants to put money back into the
g e n e ra l fund to use fo r o ther
projects.”
“Basically, theCity Council is offering
to settle our contract if we would
a g ree to te rm in a tin g fu ll-tim e
inspector positions, assigning those
duties to regular firefighters and
continuing to charge property owners
an inspection fee,” Chamberlain said.
