Smith hit a key 3-pointer minutes after drawing a technical fo r tangling w ith Anthony Peeler, and the Portland Trai l Blazers went on to el iminate the Wolves from the N B A playoffs w ith an 85-77 victo ry Tuesday night. The Blazers won the best-of-five series 3-1 and advanced to face the Utah-Seattle winner. The Jazz lead th a t se rie s 2-1 w ith G am e 4 Wednesday night in Seattle. Minnesota failed to reach the second round fo r the fourth straight season. Smith and Peeler confronted each other w ith 5:07 le ft and the W olves clin g in g to a 73-72 lead. Sm ith fell down after taking a long jum per, and Peeler walked overhim The two jawed at each other and drew double- technical fouls. A minute later, Smith was called fo r a foul on Peeler, and Smith stared him down again. The Blazers trailed 75-74 before S m ith’s 3-pointer w ith 3:45 left, and the W olves never regained the lead. Sm ith finished w ith 14 points, one fewer than Rasheed W allace and Arvydas Sabonis. K evin Garnett nearly recorded his th ird triple-double o f the series for Minnesota, fin ish in g w ith 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Women’s Cup coming to Portland A ssuciajujl E riss The W orld Cup soccer champions are returning to Portland. This time, the U.S. women’ s team w ill p la y in a tw o -d a y , fo u r-n a tio n tournament on M ay 5 and M a y 7 at C ivic Stadium. “ This is not just a friendly (exhibition), i t ’ s a very big thing,” said E m ilio P ozzi, U .S. S o cce r’ s m a n aging director o f events. Teams from M exico, South Korea, Canada and the U nited States are scheduled to play in the N ike U.S. W om en’ s Cup — on a grass fie ld installed over the artificial tu rfa tC iv ic Stadium. A fte r w in n in g the W o rld Cup last July, the U.S. w om en’ s team played an e xhibition at the Rose Garden in December. Before the W orld Cup, the U.S. played a “ sendoff” e xhibition against Canada at C iv ic Stadium before a sellout crow d o f 27,000. Pozzi said Portland’ s support o f the U.S. team also could help the city land an N C A A w o m e n ’ s so cce r tournament, w hich also m ight be held at C iv ic Stadium. Pozzi said the U.S. team w ill spend about 10 days in Portland, including a week o ftraining before its first game on M ay 5. The U nited States has won every U.S. W om en’ s Cup since it began in 1992. Indoor soccer: The Portland Pythons have received prelim inary approval to m ove their franchise to Tacoma, but they w ill take a season o ffb e fo re beginning play at the Tacoma Dome. In granting the Pythons prelim inary permission to move, the W orld Indoor Soccer League announced that there is not enough tim e fo r the franchise to prepare fo r this season, w hich w ill begin about A ug. 1. League president Gordon Jago said it w o u ld be “ almost im possible” to “ b ring about awareness, promote the team and obtain sponsorships and ticket sales in Tacoma in four o r five m o n th s .” W ith th e P yth o n s suspending operations fo r a year w h ile m aking the move, their players are being dispersed to other W IS L teams. Three players — J e ff Betts, Rob Baarts and D ick M cC orm ick — have been allocated to specific W IS L teams. W ho they are, however, w ill have to w a it u n til today, w hich is when the W N B A w ill release the names. The delay is m ostly the result o f meetings on Sunday and Monday that kept league personnel occupied. The names o f a ll the free agents allocated to all 16 W N B A teams should be available around 10 a.m. today. The Fire had hoped to bring more guards into training camp, w hich begins Wednesday. A fte r receiving six m ore players M onday, the Fire now has 17 players. The team can begin training camp w ith 18. Last week, the Fire selected four players in the W N B A draft. Its top pick, seventh overall, was Kansas’ Lyn n Pride. Portland coach Linda Hargrove expects Pride and second- ro u n d p ic k S tacey T h o m a s to contribute this summer.
