T he Interstate Firehouse Cultural C e n te r , n o w c e le b r a tin g is eighteenth anniversary, is a non profit perform ing and visual arts c e n te r d ed ica ted to d iv e rsity a cultural expression. T he pieces are rendered from the in f in ite v a r ie ty o f d is c a r d e d consum er objects collected by the artist such as tile, ceram ics, metal, glass, plastics, rocks, and bottle caps. T apogna boldly strikes to “ m a k e c o n s tru c tiv e u se o f th e product generated by our ‘throw aw ay ’ society. T he w orks are a direct result o f T a p o g n a ’s ow n p h o to g ra p h ic im a g e s and d r a w in g s . P r o f e s s io n a lly tr a in e d as a p h o to g rap h er, she first b egan com bining mosaic frames with her p h o to g r a p h ic im a g e s . T h is com bining process eventually led to the current m anifestation o f the photo image being transform ed into a mosaic. The layering process from w hich the w orks d eriv e literally gives the initial photo im a g e n ew d im e n s io n b y c o n v e rtin g it in to a te x tu ra l medium. “T he photographs that I choose for m osaic subjects are usually ordinary people, m ostly w om en, w ith a certain intensity w hich is c a u g h t by th e c a m e ra le n s ,” e x p la in s T apogna. “ T h is transformation - from one medium to another - allow s m e to spend m o re tim e w ith a c h e ris h e d im age.” Y W CA Smart C hoices Program: “ How I See M yself/H ow O thers See M e” T h e Y W C A S m a rt C h o ic e s exhibition features eighteen black and w hite photographic diptychs.
