NTSB N otes H istory of
Alaska Plane
LOS ANGELES - Part ofthe horizontal stabilizer on the
Alaska A irlinesjetliner that crashed was to be replaced
more than two years ago because o f suspicion that it
was worn, but the work was canceled after a reinspection,
federal investigators said. There was no indication
whether that decision had any bearing on the Jan. 31
crash that killed all 88 people on board, the National
Transportation Safety Board said. Eight Alaska Airlines
M D-80-series jets remain idle with tail problems
potentially related to the crash.

Spacecraft Orbits Asteroid

:
LAUREL, Md. - A robot craft became the first spacecraft
to orbit an asteroid, settling into a Valentine’s Day
rendezvous with a space rock named for the Greek god
of love. The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous, orNEAR,
spacecraft automatically fired for 57 seconds and then
signaled success to earth. NEAR will spend a year in
orbit of Eros, dropping to lower orbits. It will gather
basic research that one day may help humans defend
the Earth against a “killer asteroid” like that one thought
to have wiped out the dinosaurs.
« Trump W on’t Run for
: President
; WASHINGTON - Real estate magnate Donald Trump
I said he won’t run for president because the Reform
Party is “self-destructing" and can’t provide the support
a candidate needs to win. “You could only win the whole
; thing with a totally unified party,” Trum p told NBC.
After months o f speculation about a possible candidacy,
the billionaire said he was dissuaded in part by the
departure o f Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, who had
been an ally o f Trum p’s in the Reform Party squabbles.

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service is
taking a less confrontational approach when it sends
letters to taxpayers to notify them that employers, banks
and friends could be contacted as part o f a tax audit. The
original versions drew criticism last year for heavy-
handed w ording. The new notices w ill reflect
longstanding IRS policy o f resorting to these “third-
party” contacts only when all else fails. About 8 million
taxpayers will likely receive a notice at some point this
year
