The Mitchell County town ofCam illa appeared to be hardest hit, with a tornado cutting a 5-mile path through a housing development south o f town. A volunteer firefighter estimated that 50 to 60 homes were demolished, 90 percent ofthem mobile homes. Six people were reported dead in Mitchell County. Six more were confirmed dead in Grady County, and one in Colquitt County. A Justice official believes the department has authority, if necessary, to designate a new temporary custodian for Elian, other than his great-uncle, Lazaro Gonzalez, with whom the boy was placed after he was found in the Atlantic last Thanksgiving. A year ago, on S a tu rd a y , February 6, 1999, at approximately i :53 in the morning, at a fast food restaurant at SE 49,h and Powell, 19-year-old Hien Minh Pham and two friends were in their car waiting in line. Directly behind them, alone in his vehicle, was another friend o f Pham ’s, Pham got out o f his car and attempted to go to the aid o f his friend. But it was there that Pham was stabbed and mortally wounded. According to investigators, the suspects, who confronted Pham 's friend and stabbed Pham, are possibly associated with a gang called “The Red Cobras.” Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward o f up to $ 1,000 for information, reported toCrime Stoppers, which leads to an arrest in this case or any unsolved felony crime, and you can remain anonymous. The goal is to coordinate a response to the crippl ing o f e-retailers like Etrade, eBay and Amazon.com. Aides say the session is the latest in a series o f such meetings as Clinton seeks to beef up Internet security. The civic campus will include a parks and recreation community center, a police precinct and a public works maintenance compound. The proposed location is adjacent to Haagen Park, on NE 136,h Ave. and NE 9lh St. On Feb. 24, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., information will be shared from the January 27lh forum, and the public will be asked for further input. All three forums are at Cascade Junior High School, 13900NE 18,h St. Those who may use the new civic campus facility, or have an interest in the development o f civic facilities in the community are encouraged to participate. The third and final forum will be held March 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation provides free, supervised activities for children at the forums. The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous, orNEAR, spacecraft automatically fired for 57 seconds and then signaled success to earth. NEAR will spend a year in orbit of Eros, dropping to lower orbits.
