Ellington from page 4
Duke Ellington’s Washington is illuminated by the memories of
Washingtonians who grew up in the middle and upper classes o f the
community, as well as historians who have studied its people and
places. Woven throughout the story o f the neighborhood are stories of
Duke Ellington’s early years - his birth in 1899, his parents, his
education, and his first success as a local bandleader.
Featured are jazz pianist Billy Taylor, historians James O. Horton and
Edward C. Smith, Charles and Virginia Williams (who fell one of
Duke Ellington’s composition, “I Let A Song Go Out o f My Heart”),
Alice Spraggins (daughter O f Henry Grant, Ellington’s first music
teacher), photographer Robert H. McNeill, architect Paul Devrouax,
and many others.
