18"1 annual
Mt.
Hood Jazz Festival, presented by Tesoro Petro­
leum Corporation, will celebrate “ 100 Years Of
Jazz, Blues & More...", a selective musical history
paying tribute to such masters as Duke Ellington,
Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakely &
T h ejazz Messengers, Gerry Mulligan, and more,
Friday through Sunday, August 6-8, at Mt. Hood
Community College in Gresham, Oregon.
From spirituals to swing, from bop to blues,
from funk to fusion, the festivities will begin
with an all-star ensemble formed exclusively for
the 1999 Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, appropriately
titled SPIRITU ALS TO SW ING, featuring
Mulgrew Miller (piano), Mark W hitfield (gui­
tar), Donald Harrison (alto sax), Craig Handy
(tenor sax), Kenny Davis (bass) and Carl Allen
(drums).

TRAINING ACADEMY
PR O G R A M S
Trauma intervention Programs, Inc. (TIP), a nonprofit
emergency response team, will hold a Training Academy
for new volunteers from August 12 through August 31.
TIP Volunteers respond to fires, accidents, and other
traumatic events to provide immediate emotional and prac­
tical support to victims and their families. Training will
include information about working effectively with Police,
Firefighters, Paramedics, and others who respond to a crisis
situation.
The first meeting, at 7 PM on August 12,h, will be held
at the Portland Fire Training Bureau, 4800 NE 122"'1
Avenue This initial meeting will provide an overview of the
program Full training totals over 55 hours, spread over 10
