The Fantasticks
Lakew ood Theatre Com pany will be
having open call auditions on Sunday,
April 11 to com plete its casting o f the
musical com edy, The Fantasticks, directed
by Ron Daum. A ctors w ill receive rem u­
neration. Each actor should prepare a c las­
sie Broadw ay song for the audition. Lake-
w ood T heatre C om pany supports and
encourages m ulti-ethnic diversity in its

In 1995, D ark co -fo u n d ed T he U r­
ban L eague o f P o rtla n d ’s S aturday
School, a p ro ject-o rien ted acad em ic
program for children in second through
fifth grades. D ark also h elp ed create
the C h ild re n ’s B o o k fair, a co llab o ra­
tive effo rt betw een T he U rban L eague
o f P o rtlan d and the N orth B ranch o f the
M u ltn o m ah C o u n ty L ibrary. T he pro­
gram helps children earn books by com ­
pletin g activities.

w ho received aw ards in the four-county
area th at U n ited W ay serves. F ive
U n ited W ay m em b er agencies an d five

Streetcar Construction Underway
The first m odem streetcar in the United States started construc­
tion April 5 with track installation connecting Portland State Univer­
sity (PSU) downtown Portland to G ood Samaritan Hospital in
N orthwest Portland. To kick o ff the construction. City Commis-
sionerC harlie Hales was joined by Congressmen Earl Blumenauer
and David Wu, the Honorable Mark Hatfield. Portland Streetcar Inc
Board Chair Don M agnusen as well as over a hundred business
owners and residents along the streetcar route.
The new streetcar will run on tracks from PSU north on 10lh. west
NW Northrup, south on 23rd. east on NW Lovejoy and then south on
11* back to PSU. The streetcar will boast 10-minute headways. Fares
will be the same as Tri-Met and be transferable betw een the two transit
providers. The streetcar will be fully operational early in 2001.
Spring Book Sale
Friends o f the W ilsonville Public Li­
brary are sponsoring their Spring book
sale Saturday, April 10, from 9 AM to 6 PM
at he Old Post Office Building at 30125 SW
Boones Ferry Road. Books, videos, C D s,
m aps, puzzles and other item s w ill be sold
to benefit the library. First hour shoppers
will pay a $ 1 adm ission fee, due to the large
selection available at that time. A fter 10
AM , no fee will be charged. From 5 to 6 PM,
the price o f all rem aining item s will be 50

Poets On Campus
M ountain W riters Series and Portland
State U niversity are pleased to begin the
spring season w ith a co-sponsored read­
ing by poets Jam es Tate and D ara Wier.
C urrently professors at the U niversity o f
M assachusetts in A m herst, Jam es Tate
and D ara W ier w ere featured w ith four
other prom inent university writers in a six-
part educational TV series that aired in the
fall o f 1998. The Poetry Reading will be on
Saturday, A pril 16 at7 :3 0 in the School o f
Business A dm inistration in Portland State

The Testing Craze

N ational Center for Fair & O pen Testing
(Fair Test), will be the featured speaker at
the Portland C onference on “W hy the
Testing Craze W on’t Fix O ur Schools.”
