of Thomas J. Botkin and Joe Macca

format, the G uardino Gallery
will be presenting the work o f
artists, Thom as J. Botkin and Joe
M acca, both from MFA program at
Portland State U niversity. An open

Thom as J. Botkin will be showing
c o n c re te sc u lp tu res, “ flip s” and
“ flops” as he calls them “Flips” are
m ade o f concrete poured into m olds
and then flipped over to reveal the
texture and sm oothness o f the m ate
rial. A “ flop” is a more organic free
form sculpture, resembling lava flows.
Botkin was bom in Korea and raised
in the United States. Through his
w ork he has explored his heritage by
creating Z en rock gardens and sculp
ture that could have been produced
by volcanic forces. The familiarity o f
concrete m akes it easy to overlook,
but Botkins sculptures elevate it in
the aesthetic eye.
Joe M acca uses acrylic and dry-
wall com pound on canvas and vari
ous surfaces, all in a sm all format.
Som e o f his painting are no larger
than 3" X 5" and up to 9 1/2" X 10".
His paintings are sym bolic o f por
tals, w indow s or doorw ays. He calls
them “ intim ate w indow s, transitions
R
from one place to another place.”
The G uardino G allery is located at
2939 A lberta Street (the com er o f
two
Alberta and 30th). The Gallery is open

The concept o f the M oving to
W ork dem onstration resulted from
Sen. M ark O. H atfie ld 's efforts to
deregulate federal program s and to
stim ulate local creativity. The sena

these concepts to federal housing
