pher/dancer Bill T. Jones, one o f
the most important and celebrated
artists in the world today.
Author/photographer Susan
Kuklin, whose book, Reaching
for Dreams: A Ballet From Re­
hearsal to Opening Night, won
an ALA Best Book For Young
Adults, created the captivating
photographs o f Jones.
The perform er is pictured us­
ing his entire body to arch, curve,
leap, and stretch with fun m ove­
ments that kids child can easily
imitate. One color spread is d e­
voted entirely to hands and fin­
gers.
With unabashed delight, Jones
shares his passion for dance with
children in photographs and
words that are powerful in their
sim plicity, appealing to their
natural desire to express them ­
selves with their bodies. Publi­
cation o f Dance coincides with
Bill T. Jones’ and the Bill T.
Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Com ­
pany m ulti-city tour which will
be in Portland, OR on March 1-
3, 1999.

Charles Dickens (lassie A ChristinavCa
Portland Center Stage will stage
the largest production in its his­
tory this holiday season as it un­
veils a new adaptation o f Charles
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The
production opened December 4
and plays through January 2,1999
in the Newmark (formerly Inter­
mediate) Theatre o f the Portland
Center for the performing Arts.
The play is adapted and staged
by Elizabeth Huddle, PCS Artis­
tic Director. It features scenery
by Scott Weldin, costumes by
Jeanne Arnold and lighting by
Rick Paulsen. For this song-filled
Carol, composer Karl Mansfield
has written several new pieces o f
music as well as including tradi­
tional favorites and Victorian car­
ols.
Terry Sneed, last seen in Port­
land Center Stage's raucous tour-
de-force A Tuna Christmas, plays
Ebenezer Scrooge. The cast fea­
tures many Portland favorites,
including Susannah Mars as the
ghost o f Christm as past, Ted
Roisum as the Ghost o f Christ­
mas present and David Meyers as
Jacob Marley.
Other cast members are Victor
Morris as the Narrator, Robert
M cGranahan as Bob C ratchit,
Dance,
sure for themselves and others.
Jones inspires children with po­
etic language that celebrates the
ab ility o f dance to enhance
children’s connectedness to the
world and to humanity.
“ When I am dancing, I am
everyone and I am only one,” he
writes. “ When I am dancing I
am everywhere and I am hardly
there.”
