Celebration
I
n the afterm ath o f a strong surge
o f revitalization and develop­
ment throughout, the Northeast Port­
land community announces its first,
annual “Spirit on the Boulevard” cel­
ebration to show o ff its new look and
promote com munity pride and unity
during the holiday season.
The celebration it the efforts o f
many in the com munity - residents,
business owners, neighborhood and
business associations, city leaders,
non-profit organizations, city agen­
cies, school children, communities o f
faith and other groups. Spearheaded
by the Portland Police Bureau, the
North-Northeast Business Associa­
tion (N-NEBA), the Northeast Com ­
m unity D evelopm ent Corporation
(NECDC), and the NE Coalition o f
Neighborhoods, The “Spirit on the
Boulevard” is a series o f activities
centered around raising funds to pur­
chase large wreaths to be hung along
the boulevard from NE Broadway
Street to NE Colum bia Boulevard
beginning December 4.

T H E B O U L E V A R D ” -The
“Spirit on the Boulevard” project is
a partnership w ith the North-
Northeast Business Association N-
NEBA), the N E Coalition o f
Neighborhoods, Northeast Com m u­
nity Development Corporation
(NECDC), and the Portland Police
Bureau to implement an annual
holiday celebration on Martin
Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The “S pirif’project brings together
business owners, neighbors, students,
com munity organizations and civic
leaders in an annual series o f events to
highlight the revitalization efforts tak­
ing place in the area and promote a
sense o f pride and unity during the
holiday season. Activities for the
“Spirit on the Boulevard” include:
H O L ID A Y W R E A T H S - Funds
are being raised through grants and
donations from businesses and neigh­
borhood associations to purchase and
hang up to 100 large, artificial wreaths
along the boulevard, from NE Broad­
w ay Street to N E C olum bia Boule­
vard. A large holiday tree, to be
designated the “Com m unity Tree”,
will be placed at the Harry Jackson
Plaza, 5020 N E M LK Jr. Blvd., for
com m unity decorations and as a cen­
ter for com m unity activities;

N -N E B A , the S kanner and P ort­
land O b serv er new spaper are cre­
ating holiday ad vertisem ent sec­
tions in their p apers for the busi­
ness to do group ads at special
rates;

shops w ill be held to allow the
children to m ake ornam ents for the
com m unity tree. T hey w ill also

The festivities w ill begin on Fri­
day, Decem ber 4, at a reception
hosted by A didas A m erica at the
Harry Jackson Plaza, site o f the
Comm unity Tree. The M ayor or
her designee w ill “light” the Tree
and “hang” a wreath. A t about the
same time, the businesses along
the boulevard w ill sw itch on their
lights to begin the com m unity c e l­
ebration;

church choirs and neighborhood com­
munity groups have been asked to carol
at the reception, as well as during the
tones o f the open house. The carolers
will be positioned at key locations along
the boulevard, for example, at the
Safeway store. New Song Church, the
ChevronatFremontaid the Reflections,
as wefl as the Harry Jackson Plaza.

us eating the rig h t food,”
said Cox. “ He counseled
us on how to b e tte r our
lives and drove us around
to our a p p o in tm e n ts.”
