Baseball Fireworks Predicted This Season, The Weather
Channel Says High Heat + High Humidity = Hits, Homeruns
N ext week ’ s All-Stargame at Coors
eld in Colorado may set o ff some
ist-4th fireworks that look rem ark-
ily like baseballs.
M ore and m ore baseballs are tak-
g to the high sky this season, as Mark
IcGwire threatens to beat Roger
laris’ homerun record set nearly 40
sirs ago, and Ken Griffey Jr. and
ammy Sosa stay close behind, knock-
ig them out gam e after game.
So w hat’s it all about? And does that
iuch-maligned El Nino have anything
i do with it?
A ccording to the m ost reliable
¿eather in form ation source. T he
Veather Channel, chalk it all up to the
VUVEM theory. (That’s pronounced
W ah-Vum.")
“T h e ' W UVEM theory’ is tried and
true, and it makes for a great baseball
season,” according to M ike Eckert,
The W eather's Channel’s CEO and a
die-hard Chicago Cubs tan. “Any ob

COM PANY BACKGROUND:
The Weather Channel, television’s
24 hour national weather network, is
seen in more than 70 million U.S. cable
households. The W eather Channel
website, www .weather.com, attracts up
to 20 million hits and 1.5 to 3 million
page views per day. It is owned by

It all comes down to science: high
heat + high humidity = higher number
o f hits and homeruns. To be more
specific. W ater V apor M olecules
(W VM s) are lighter than most other
gases that make up the air. High hu
midity means more W VM s and less
air resistance, thus a smoother path
for that frying pan. And, because it a

Three Fans Killed in US. 500 Crash
|v MIKE HARRIS
As they heard the noise of a
rash below, brothers Gerald and
Lich Bramer stood up to see what
vas going on during the U.S. 500
>n Sunday at Michigan Speedway.
“The next thing 1 know, a tire was
flying in the air right at us,” Gerald
Bramer said.
Three spectators were killed and
rix others injured when the one-car
CTash hurled a tire and other car
parts into the grandstand at the
fourth turn. It was the first time in
more than a decade that spectators
were killed at a major auto race.
Dr. Gregory Baumann, the chief
m edical d irecto r at M ichigan
Speedway, said two people died
instantly from the impact of the de
bris. A third person was taken to a
track medical unit, where resuscita
tion failed.
Officials identified the victims
as Michael Teny Tautkus, 49, and
Sheryl Ann Laster, 40, both of Milan,
Mich., and Kenneth Dale Fox, 38, of
Lansing, Mich.
Six spectators were taken by he
licopter to Foote Hospital in Jack-
son. Hospital spokeswoman Robin
Kirkpatrick said the six had injuries
ranging from a fractured leg to neck
and back pain. All were expected to
be released Sunday night, she said.
The area where the fans were hit
included a block of seats that the
hospital had complimentary tickets
for, and one of the injured worked
at the hospital, Kirkpatrick said.
Gerald Bramer said he threw up
his arm to block the tire from Mexi
can driver Adrian Fernandez s car
as it brushed by him. It hit Rich
Bramer in the back, but neither was
injured seriously.
Becky Lutgen, the news direc
tor of Lansing’s WLNS-TV, was at
the track with her boyfriend watch
ing Fernandez’s car as it rounded
the bend. She said they didn’t see
the tire from his car until it hit the
stands and then landed about four
or five rows behind them.
“It ricocheted in the stands and
came to rest between some rows. It
went by so fast,” Lutgen said.
