In a recent survey o f teen girls aged 12-17, a stagger ing 87% preferred pants to skirts. A nd “ little sisters,” girls aged 5-10, are looking up to the older girls for the sam e fashions. T he tw o top looks; cargo or carpenter pants paired w ith the cool, crisp lines o f a w hite shirt and patterned vest. O r, flared jean s in a w ide variety o f styles and designs (fringed, a p p liq u é , e m b r o id e r e d ) topped w ith tee shirts and hooded sw eatshirts. “G irl m eets boy is d efi nitely the top look in teen fashion for Back-to-School 1998,” explains T.J. Maxx fashion spokesperson Laura Cervone. “The hottest trends are boy inspired dressing w ith a flair, w e ’re seeing baggy cargo pants com bined w ith a tee and sw eatshirt. W hit shirts tucked into ex tra-w ide leg jean s or carpen ter pants. C h unky soled boots and shoes paired with soft leather knapsacks com p le te th e e n s e m b le fo r to d a y ’s m o st fash io n a b le youths.” Younger girls seek the same look in a bit less boyish option. Jeans are a tad more tailored in the waist with bel 1 bottoms and age appropriate accessories such as rainbow embroidery or flower appliqués. Vest tell the “old school boy” story with a twist: 1998 youths pair them with skate pants, cargo, carpenter, or wide legjeans. In the sam e T.J. Maxx fashion survey, only 15% o f teen girls chose the fem inine look as a 1998 trend setter.
