held Sunday May 31,1998 at the University
o f Portland, Chiles Center. The entire com
munity was invited to join in supporting
African American youth who are succeed
ing.
The event was co-sponsored by Bridge
Builders Program and the Urban League of
Portland and other partners include com
munity-based agencies, schools and social
service organizations.
About 100 high school graduates partici
pated in the ceremony, with their families
and friends in attendance.
The Keynote speaker was O kianer Chris
tian Dark, Assistant U.S. Attorney.
The achievements o f African American
youth are often overshadowed by those o f
their classmates and the community is often
not aware o f the awards, honors, and schol
arships received by our youth. The Black
Baccalaureate showcases the talents, intel
ligence, and community involvement o f our
youth.

M ichael M orrow, PCC Child Care Ser
vices C oordinator and co-organizer o f the
conference, said anyone who has listened
to the students follow ing the May 2 1 shoot
ing at Thurston High School in Springfield
knows why such a conference is needed.
“The overw helm ing response from stu
dents reacting to the Springfield tragedy is
that adults d o n ’t listen to u s.” ' said
M orrow. “The focus o f this conference
is com m unicating with youth.”
Morrow added that this conference gave
media outlets the opportunity to see young
people in the Portland area who seek to
help curb youth violence and m ake a dif
ference in their com m unities.
“There is a huge num ber o f youths out
there who are doing great things,” he said
“This conference showed people who they
arc and what they are doing to becom e a
