The M ultnom ah C ounty Y outh A d v i­ sory Board, a com m ittee o f the M ult­ nom ah C om m ission on C h ild re n and Fam ilies, enters its third year beginning this fall. The board consists o f a m ax i­ mum o f 32 youth (ages 14 - 19) from across M ultnom ah C o unty-from p u blic high schools, private high schools, alternative schools, em ancipated youth program s and o th e r youth program s th roughout the county. A free ceremony to celebrate the achieve­ ments o f A frican American graduating high school senior from the Portland area was held Sunday May 31,1998 at the University o f Portland, Chiles Center. The entire com ­ munity was invited to join in supporting African American youth who are succeed­ ing. The event was co-sponsored by Bridge Builders Program and the Urban League of Portland and other partners include com ­ munity-based agencies, schools and social service organizations. About 100 high school graduates partici­ pated in the ceremony, with their families and friends in attendance. The Keynote speaker was O kianer Chris­ tian Dark, Assistant U.S. Attorney. The achievements o f African American youth are often overshadowed by those o f their classmates and the community is often not aware o f the awards, honors, and schol­ arships received by our youth. The Black Baccalaureate showcases the talents, intel­ ligence, and community involvement o f our youth. Y ou a d v o c a te s, e d u c a to rs, y o u th - m inded com m unity m em bers and the youths them selves gathered to take part in a m ulti-faceted w orkshop aimed at help­ ing adults and youths com m unicate better for the good o f an entire com m unity. The keynote speaker o f the event was Della M. Hughes, executive director o f the National N etw ork for Youth in W ashington, D.C. Y oung People: T ransform ing Lives, T ransform ing C om m unities was a confer­ ence bringing com m unity m em bers to­ gether with young people, parents, educa­ tors and youth services professional to discuss how people in the com m unity can help em pow er young people to succeed and feel like they are a part o f the “big pictu re.” The conference featured w ork­ shops on conversation m ethods for adults and youths, a youth developm ent sem inar, how to involve youth in policy-m aking d ecisions at the county level and a host o f oth er activities. W ashington) M ichael M orrow, PCC Child Care Ser­ vices C oordinator and co-organizer o f the conference, said anyone who has listened to the students follow ing the May 2 1 shoot­ ing at Thurston High School in Springfield knows why such a conference is needed. “The overw helm ing response from stu­ dents reacting to the Springfield tragedy is that adults d o n ’t listen to u s.” ' said M orrow. “The focus o f this conference is com m unicating with youth.” Morrow added that this conference gave media outlets the opportunity to see young people in the Portland area who seek to help curb youth violence and m ake a dif­ ference in their com m unities. “There is a huge num ber o f youths out there who are doing great things,” he said “This conference showed people who they arc and what they are doing to becom e a part o f the solution." I
