Kennedy School Supports Cultural Center T heC om m unity History C enter at Portland Com m unity C o lleg e's Cascade C am pus re ceived a big boost at a pre-opening party at M cM enamis Kennedy School facility on M on day, Oct. 20. 'Hie vent, where m ore than 1,000 people enjoyed free food, drink, music and (ours of the newly renovated school at 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave., netted $10,559 for the year- old minority history center. "It lit in perfectly with our community feel at the Kennedy School." said Melissa Groshong, project manager for the new McMenamins site. “Anything that lets us work closer with the com munity like this is something we like to do.” Groshong said she hopes the event will mark the beginning of an ongoing relation w ith Com munity History Center projects, as well as other Cascade Campus events, such ;is the annual Fes tival of African Films each February. The Com m unity History Center was cre- ated in 1996 in response to community re quests to then-new Cascade Campus Execu tive Dean Mildred O llee for a facility which would preserve the history of African A m eri can people in Portland. At that time Dean Ollee accepted the gift of the papers anil personal library of Rev. John II Jackson, a prominent local minister and civ il rights activ ist. and this collection became the cornerstone of a signifi cant com m unity resource Last year, the Com m unity History Center presented a sym posium on the history of A fri can Americans in Portland. Next March, it w ill present its second symposium, now known as the Jackson Forum, on the Vanport Hood and its impact on the African Am erican community in Portland. The C om m unity History Center has also created a permanent display about the life and work o f Rev. Jackson for the foyer of Jackson Hall.
