H e ’s fun. H e ’s outgo ing. H e's not so tense, like P.J. was. H e ’s not uptight. H e'sjust easier to get along with and talk to. ” said o f the new coach. Kenny Anderson, who was always careful not to criticize Carlesimo, said he expected to have a bigger say in how the team is run under Dunleavy. “Things 1 see out there, I’ll speak my mind and he might listen,” Ander son said. “P.J. was a great coach for me, and I got along with him, but he was more, ‘This is what w e’ve been practicing and this is what we want to do and this is how w e’re going to do it.’ There w asn’t much bending with P.J.” Rider said Dunleavy appreciates the opportunity to coach a young, athletic group o f players. “It’s like a new life for him ,” Rider said, “and he definitely realizes he has the talent here.” The oldest and youngest players on the team, A rvydas S abonis and Jermaine O ’Neal, sat out Friday’s Baltimore 3, Seattle 1 The Baltimore Orioles reached the American League C ham pionship Series for the second consecutive year, defeating the Seattle Mariners, 3 -1 , as M ike M u ssin a ag ain outpitched Randy Johnson and Jeff Reboulet and Geronimo Berroa hit solo homers. They await the winner o f the Division Se ries between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. After allowing two runs and five hitsoverseven innings in Game One, Mussina (2-0) was even better, lie gave up just two hits a solo homer by Edgar Martinez and a single by Rob Ducey in the second inning while striking out seven in seven innings. The right-hander improved to 10-1 all-time against the Mariners and 3-0 against Johnson this year. For the first time in the series, the Orioles used the formula that earned them 98 wins and an East Divisison title this year. H ard-throw ing Armando Benitez pitched a hitless eighth and Randy Myers worked a I - 2-3 ninth with two strikeouts tor his 46th save in 47 chances this season. J E ltM A lN E O ’ N E A I. LEARNER GARBAGE ermaine O ’Neal learned something about garbage time in the NBA last season», and even more along the high ways o f South Carolina last summer. Now, just a few days shy o f his 19th birth day, he says h e ’s ready for prime time. “I’m, like, 10 times better than I was last year,” O ’Neal said Sunday at the Portland Trail Blazers’ annual media day. “T hat’s how much harder I worked this sum m er.” Some o f that work occurred along the high ways around O ’N eal’s hometown o f Colum bia, S.C., where he served 100 hours o f com munity service picking up litter. “It was hard work at a minimum o f eight hours a day,” he said. “It was hot out there.” O ’Neal still thinks he d id n ’t deserve the treatment he received in Columbia, when he was arrested for allegedly mouthing o ff to security guards and sh e riff s deputies while passing out party invitation leaflets at a mall. O ’Neal says he believes he shouldn't have been arrested, but was ready to pay the $300 fine just to end the matter. But when he mistakenly missed his court date, the judge sentenced him to 100 hours’ community service, and Richland County put him on the litter patrol. O ’Neal showed up as required each day just before 8 a m. “I wanted to make them think I was enjoying it,” O ’Neal said. “T hat’s one thing I guess they couldn’t really understand. I came to the com munity service every day smiling, acting like I really wanted to be there.” He said he felt that the local authorities were pushing him just to try to make him rebel in order to make an example out o f him. “I learned next time to just walk away,” he said. The Blazers have hired O ’N eal’s high school coach, George Glymph, as director o f player development. ^ I t ' s ( A if ( f o o d • Books < J- • Greeting Cards • Balloons • Ethnic Figurines • Christian Reading Materials • Gift Baskets • Affordable Gift Ideas f (¡fab's (gifts c - o ~ CT 7* ; ¡5 % o & TRANSAXLE INC ’ ■*------------- * T,„, By Appointment Con vent lentil Can clean Sump & Screen I • Visual Inspeciion Remove Pan • Adjust Bands Ar I inkage | • Replace Pan Gasket &r Fluid I 12450 SE 80th AVE.1 • n o FREE ESTIMATES!
